Introduction

While Jews have been involved in the banking industry for centuries, the vast majority of their dealings were with non-Jewish clients. Many teshuvos have been written discussing the permissibility of individual Jews depositing money into a bank that will lend money to Jews with interest, as well as borrowing from a bank that has Jewish owners or depositors.

Points to Ponder

• What are the possible leniencies to allow depositing money into a bank if some of the money will be lent to Jews with interest?

• May a corporation that is owned or controlled by Jews collect interest from a Jewish borrower?

• Is there a halachic difference between a regular bank and a credit union?

• If an irreligious Jewish lender demands that a borrower pay interest or suffer the consequences, may the borrower pay him?
