| "And I will meet there with the children of Israel, and it shall be sanctified with My glory" (Shemot 29:43) Rashi brings the Midrash: "Do not read 'with My glory' (בכבודי), but rather 'with My honored ones' (במכובדי)," alluding to the death of Aharon's sons, as it says, "Through those who are close to Me, I will be sanctified." Honor (kavod) represents a balance of closeness and distance. For example, when one sees a great and renowned Rav, there is a natural feeling of love and a desire to draw close, yet at the same time, out of respect, a certain distance is maintained. This dynamic exists as well between husband and wife—while their bond is absolute, mutual respect requires maintaining a proper balance between closeness and space. True closeness cannot exist without the necessary separation that honor demands. The tragic passing of Aharon's sons occurred because they desired only the sweetness of closeness to the Shechinah, without the necessary sense of distance. They wanted to enter fully into Hashem's presence to honor Him, but because they lacked the necessary separation, they perished, G-d forbid. This is the lesson the pasuk teaches us: The Mishkan is the dwelling place of the Shechinah, the source of all spiritual delight for Am Yisrael. However, we must be careful to honor the Mishkan, to honor the Shechinah, and to maintain the proper distance when necessary. Only then can we truly receive its divine influence in the proper way. May we soon merit to see the rebuilding of the Beit HaMikdash and the revelation of the Shechinah within us. Amen. Shabbat Shalom |
