This is Chana Miriam bat Shoshana, the girl who had an accident in Chile. Please continue to daven for her.
My StoryWelcome to our CaringBridge website. We've created it to keep friends and family updated about our daughter, Hannah, who sustained a serious head injury on June 11 while studying and traveling in Chile. She fell from the second story of a hostel in the town of Valparaiso in a freak accident. Visit often to read the latest journal entries, visit the photo gallery, and write us a note in our guestbook. JournalSunday, June 26, 2011 3:18 PM, CLT Receive journal notifications: written by Cheryl Kaplan Thank you for your continuing support, kind words, and sharing of personal stories. We are moved and strengthened by your many warm gestures. We are continuing to work with the neurologist whose specialty is seizure management. Hannah is now on a continuous EEG to get a bigger picture of her seizure activity, which is currently her biggest challenge. Though there is some seizure activity, the doctor feels that she´s responding well to medication, which is being tweaked to determine what will work the best. She has been taken off of sedation meds and is beginning to stir. However, the anti-seizure meds have somewhat of a sedative effect, so they may increase the time it takes for her to become more alert. Hannah has strong movement in her legs and the arm that isn't braced from the clavicle injury, and she can move her head. Many times she works her legs into a frog position (rana in Spanish) so we've been calling her Hannita Ranita. She opens her eyes for a few seconds at a time, and the neurologist observed her open her eyes and turn her head in response to her name being called. We haven't had the pleasure of observing this milestone yet. She had responses to pain and other stimuli, with no corresponding seizure activity. My sister Pam arrived this morning to provide support and company. After a quick stop at the house for a lovingly prepared breakfast with our Chilean family, we arrived at the clinic and Pam dove right in to Hannah's case with a meeting with the neurologist. With her fluency in Spanish, Pam helped interpret during the meeting. I should mention that while almost all of the doctors here speak English, they are sometimes more comfortable speaking Spanish, so Pam will be a big help in this regard. In addition, her expertise as a speech-language pathologist may come in handy. Rabbi Jaim from Ruaj Ami, our adopted synagogue during our time here, stopped by before departing for a two week trip to the U.S. for the specific purpose of meeting Pam and saying goodbye before leaving town. He's been an amazing source of support to us during these last two weeks, and we'll miss him and his family. It's a cold, crisp, clear day in Santiago. Tomorrow/Monday is a national holiday, but we're lucky that our neurologist is coming in each day of the long weekend to monitor Hannah. We're also excited that our Chilean family gets an extra day off of work and school so that we can be together. Our niece, Julia, had her bat mitzvah in California yesterday, and we were very sad to have missed this special occasion and family gathering, but Charlie and Sophie were there to represent us. Mazel Tov Julia! Hi, Phyl, Thanks so much. This is the latest news from her Caringbridge website. As you can see, she is doing a little better. Unfortunately, her condition can't really be assessed because she's still in a coma. Cheryl and Mark (Hannah's parents) send these wonderful, articulate updates about her condition. I am continually amazed by their grace and yes, even humor, under these incredibly trying conditions. Thank you and your friends for your continued prayers and good thoughts. It's really the only thing we can offer. Avis |

Seize the Moments Captivating Nuggets of Torah Wisdom By Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski
THE ARTSCROLL SALE ALMOST OVER GET THIS WHILE ITS STILL ON SALE SO GO GET IT AT KESHER STAM TODAY
A moment here, a moment there: That is all you need!
Today's rarest, most precious commodity is not gold or oil or even water. The most valuable thing we all possess is - time. In our busy lives, it's so hard to carve out even a few minutes for reflection, introspection, or meaningful thought. But if we don't have hours at our disposal, we do have a moment here, a moment there. Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, M.D. shows us how to make the most of those moments, with short capsules of Torah-based wisdom.
As always, Rabbi Twerski combines incisive wisdom with entertaining stories, both of great Torah personalities and of the many people he has met in his own remarkable career.
From anger management to the Torah response to consumerism, from learning to become a "genius in kindness" to the Jewish take on ecology - here are nuggets of wisdom that will delight and enlighten us. And each will only take a few moments of our precious, precious time.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM RABBI CHAIM GOLDBERGER FROM MINNEAPOLIS MISSOURI
The State of Iowa can be brutal toward "outsiders". Mrs. Ze'eva Rachel (Wendy) bas Chaya Runge was prosecuted mercilessly for business problems created mostly by the State's own misdeeds.
After only one relatively minor charge stuck, the judge got upset and decided to throw the book at her and put her behind bars for 10 years -- with no mercy for a husband, four children, and an elderly father-in-law who depend on her care!
Mrs. Runge needs our tefillos and contributions as she prepares her appeal of this beastly sentence. Checks can be sent to Defense Fund, Kenesseth Israel Congregation, 4330 W. 28th St., Minneapolis, MN 55416. May Hashem bless us soon with the Geulah Shelemah.

[chicago-aneinu] RE: urgent - missing yeshiva bochur
There seems to have been some misinformation regarding the boy from Switzerland, who disappeared yesterday in the Five Towns. The boy is still missing, and still is in need of tefillos. Also, the boy was not a member of Rabbi Katzenstein's yeshiva. Please continue to daven for a yeshua for Micha ben Chava.

The Halachos of Ma'aser Kesafim The Laws of Seperating a Tenth of One's Wealth for Tzedakah
Ma’aser Kesafim, giving one-tenth of one’s wealth to tzedakah, is a confusing topic to many. Time and again halachic questions arise: What exactly are the things that are obligated in ma’aser – money, or even goods and wares? What about items received as a gift and what if the gift was given for a specific purpose? What is the obligation regarding financial support received from parents as compensation for a loss? Can ma’aser kesafim be given to an organization or an institution? Can it be used to purchase a seat or an aliyah in shul? What about purchasing sefarim?
This informative book answers these and other questions, from their fundamental guidelines to their practical applications. Annotated, with numerous contemporary rulings on issues that impact our daily lives.GET IT TODAY AT KESHER STAM WHEN ITS 20% OFF $15.99

At the end of this week's parsha we learn about the episode of Miriam and the lashon hara she spoke about her brother, Moshe Rabbeinu. According to the Ramban, one of the 613 mitzvos of the Torah is to remember this episode and to thereby refrain from speaking any lashon hara. One of the common applications of lashon hara that requires constant sensitivity and attention is lashon hara as it applies to shidduch information.

DONT FORGET RABBI LAZER BRODY ON SHAVUOS PART 2
Having seen and heard the glory of Hashem with their own eyes and ears on the very first Shavuot, when Israel received the Torah from Hashem, the Children of Israel trembled with fear. The Midrash tells us that the angels had to force the souls back into the Jewish bodies; otherwise, the people couldn't have continued to maintain their physical existence in the presence of such super-high-voltage holiness.
The Torah is a blueprint for life. Therefore, the above passage's description of Shavuos and the receiving of Torah carries two particular intrinsic messages that teach an important lesson about the service of Hashem. Rebbe Nachman of Breslev (Likutei Moharan I:116) writes:
"The spiritual forces of severe judgment denounce one who – by virtue of his own deeds – is not worthy of earning proximity to Hashem, and refuse to allow him to connect to a genuine tzaddik and to the path of truth. Hashem loves justice; therefore, He must seemingly agree to prevent that person from reaching the path of life, in light of that person's bad deeds according to justice, for Hashem loves justice. But in truth, Hashem, blessed be He, loves Israel, and His love for Israel is more than His love of justice. So what does He do? Seemingly, He must consent to the demands of justice to disallow a person from reaching the truth, since the person has incurred sever judgment, for Hashem loves justice as already mentioned. But, in the essence of truth, despite a person's past, Hashem desires that he come closer to Him, for He loves Israel more than He loves justice as mentioned above. Hashem therefore consents to enable obstacles to obstruct the person, but He His blessed Self conceals Himself within the obstacles. Anyone with spiritual awareness can find Hashem hiding within the obstacles themselves. In actuality – there are no obstacles at all, and a person can come closer to Hashem by way of the obstacles, for Hashem is concealed within the obstacles!"
DONT FORGET RABBI LAZER BRODY ON SHAVUOS PART 1
Mick Jagger and a popular avant-garde magazine turned the expression “rolling stone” into a household word. But, did you ever stop and think about what a rolling stone really signifies?
A person is walking down the street; he sees a white, roundish looking stone in the middle of the street. He has an irresistible urge to kick the stone as he’s walking in stride. The stone rolls straight for a few meters, and when our pedestrian catches up to it, he kicks it again. After the third or fourth kick, he ignores the stone altogether, until some other person on foot comes by and kicks the stone. Such is the life of a rolling stone – it gets kicked from person to person and place to place.
What in the world does all this have to do with Shavuot?

Examine the bonding aspect of your sovereignty. Healthy independence should not prevent you from bonding with another person. On the contrary: self-confidence allows you to respect and trust another's sovereignty and ultimately bond with him. And that bond will strengthen your own sovereignty, rather than sacrifice it.
Does my sovereignty prevent me from bonding? Could that be because of deeper insecurities that I am unaware of? Do I recognize the fact that a fear of bonding reflects on lack of self-confidence in my own sovereignty? Do I talk to the one with whom I bond and discuss my fears that bonding will compromise my boundaries?
Exercise for the day: Actualize your sovereignty by intensifying your bond with a close one.

Nachum Segal Presents the Debut of the New Shira Chadasha CD 'Al Hatorah'
Nachum welcomed Nachman Seltzer, live via telephone to JM in the AM for the debut of the new Shira Chadasha Boy's Choir CD: "Al Hatorah." Nachum asked Nachman about the origin of the choir and how he amassed such great talent for these and past projects. Al Hatorah is the Shira Chadasha Boys Choir fourth CD (following Acheke Lo, Arayvim Zeh Lozeh & The Chanukah Album) and it boasts 11great new songs covering a variety of moods and styles. The impetus for this new CD was an idea that came to Nachman during one of the choir's earliest performances; at the Siyum Hashas in Yerushalayim which was held at Binyanei Hauma. Nachum played several of the new songs on the air and had Nachman explain how the project came about.

Shira Chadasha Boys Choir Nachman Seltzer and the talented boys from Israel's very own Shira Chadasha Boys Choir are back with an all new album "Al HaTorah – The Torah Album." This album, their fourth (Acheke Lo, Arayvim Zeh Lozeh & The Chanukah Album) boasts 11 amazing, all-new tracks and is their best one yet. The idea behind the album came to Nachman during one of the choir's earliest performances at the Siyum Hashas in Yerushalayim which was held at Binyanei Hauma. It was an incredibly moving experience for everyone who has the privilege to attend. Standing right in front of three rows of Gedolei Hador was a tremendous zechus. Seeing the huge crowd stand and call out "Baruch Shem Kavod Malchuso Liolam Vaed" was a moment that brought tears to many eyes. But the highlight of the evening for me personally was when the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel Shlita, arose to speak. His message was short but so inspirational. "Hadran Alecha Talmud Bavli'" he said, and you could feel how much he loved those words. He continued, "Hadran Aleicha Talmud Bavli are the most beautiful words that a Yid can say!" Thus was born the kernel of the song Hadran and the cornerstone of The Torah Album. May we merit to sing this very song at the upcoming Siyum Hashas and may we all be zoche to hear shiur from Moshiach in the newly rebuilt Beis Hamikdash speedily in our days. (Nachman Seltzer, producer and composer).

CHASSIDIC PEARLS BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS NASO
(PLEASE LEARN THIS POST FOR A YESHUA FOR Yoel Zev ben Mirel Rissa Chava AND Yaakov Yoseph ben Raizel THE BOYS IN JAPAN)
"Your midsection distended" (Bamidbar 5:22).
From the above passage, we learn Hashem's policy of measure-for-measure: A faithful wife's midsection is intended to expand while taking part in the wonderful mitzvah of bearing children. Alternately, if a woman is unfaithful, her midsection also swells and distends, but leads to her imminent death.
Our passage at hand conveys an additional eye-opening moral: The same exact limb or action can be used either way – to perform a mitzvah or to commit a sin. Hashem gives us the option to utilize not only every part of our bodies, but each of our possessions, as we see fit; this is the foundation of free choice. Without free choice, the framework of reward and punishment makes no sense.
Rebbe Nachman of Breslev elaborates on the principle of using one's powers for the good. In Likutei Moharan II:23, he writes, "Sometimes when people dance and rejoice, they grab a person from the outside – that he's sad and depressed – and they force him into the circle of dancers, and force him to rejoice with them."

BAR MITZVAH PARSHA BONUS Reb Natan of Breslev advises (Kitzur Likkutei Moharan I: 51.2), that a person shouldn't wait until encountering trouble; he or she should give a pidyon to a tzaddik even in good times, to cleanse their spiritual slate of any accrued severe judgments, to prevent future trouble. He also says that giving food and drink to Torah scholars also serves as a pidyon.

In this week's Parsha we learn how the Bnei Yisrael were arranged when encamped and while travelling in the desert. The Kli Yakar explains that it was through this precise arrangement that Hashem's shechina was made to dwell upon each and every tribe.
Similarly, in Parshas Balak, Rashi tells us of yet another special arrangement which added to the kedusha of the Bnei Yisrael. This was the manner in which they arranged the entrances to their tents. Although everyone was encamped in close proximity to one another, their tents were arranged in such a way that no one's entrance faced the entrance of anyone else. This was done in order to better protect everyone's privacy which added to their kedusha and tznius.
According to halacha, privacy isn't merely a suggestion or good ethics, but rather, it is a legal right that is enforceable in Beis Din. Indeed, there are many laws intended to protect our privacy and contribute to our overall comfort. These halachos are known as nizkei shecheinim.

This week's parsha discusses the laws of a sotah. The sotah is a married woman who is suspected of having relations with another man. Such a woman is forced to drink some specially prepared water. If she is indeed guilty, her stomach would explode and her leg would fall off. It was a gruesome death that was carried out in public.
The Gemora in Maseches Sotah teaches that the sotah was driven by her jealousy of someone else's husband. In turn, she was repaid by loosing her own husband as well as her life.

Examine the discipline of your sovereignty and leadership. Although sovereignty is loving, it needs to be balanced with discipline. Effective leadership is built on authority and discipline.
There is another factor in the discipline of sovereignty: determining the area in which you have jurisdiction and authority. Do I recognize when I am not an authority? Do I exercise authority in unwarranted situations? Am I aware of my limitations as well as my strengths? Do I respect the authority of others? Dignity also needs discipline. A dignified person needs to have a degree of reserve.
Exercise for the day: Before taking an authoritative position on any given issue, pause and reflect if you have the right and the ability to exercise authority in this situation.
