BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA PARSHAS LECH LECHA 5773

In this week's parsha Hashem commanded Avraham Avinu (13:17): "Arise, walk through the entire land, its length and breadth." The Gemara (Bava Basra (100a) derives from here that if one merely works or uses land in a normal manner one can acquire it, a method commonly known as kinyan chazaka. As such, Avraham Avinu acquired Eretz Yisroel through kinyan chazaka. The Rambam (Mechira 1:17) states that this form of acquisition is only valid for Jews but does not tak e effect for non-Jews. Therefore, the question is asked, that if Avrohom Avinu was not a Jew until after his bris mila then how was his kinyan chazaka effective? One possible answer is that even the Rambam would agree that a non-Jew can acquire ownerless land by means of kinyan chazaka. As the Dvar Avrohom explains (vol.1;10;16). Eretz Yisroel was considered to be hefker at that time, and hence, Avrohom Avinu was able to acquire it through kinyan chazaka even though he wasn't technically Jewish. BRESLEV.CO.IL BONUS THE REBBE ON Territorial Concessions

Editor's note: The following are comments that the Lubavitcher Rebbe of holy and blessed memory made 21 years ago on 10 Shevat, 5752. These comments were directed at the Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzchak Shamir. It's amazing how applicable the Rebbe's holy words are to our situation today, showing us the truth and timeliness of the tzaddik's words and vision, which Breslev Israel takes honor in sharing with you: When Abraham first entered the Land of Canaan, G-d promised him, "I will give this land to your descendants." At that time the Land of Israel became the eternal heritage of the Jewish people, their land for all time. Even during the years of our people’s exile, Eretz Yisrael remains our land, as reflected in the prayer we recite three times each day: "Gather us together from the four corners of the earth to our land."

RAV KOOK ON PARSHAS LECH LECHA

Translated and abridged by Rabbi Chanan Morrison Parshat Lech Lecha Stars and Sand When Abram complained to God that he was childless, God promised that his children would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. "God took him outside and said, 'Look at the sky, and count the stars if you can! So will be your descendants.'" (Gen. 15:5) On another occasion, God promised Abraham that his children would be like "the sand on the seashore" (Gen. 22:17). Why are the Jewish people compared to both stars and grains of sand?

CHASSIDI PEARLS ON THE PARSHA BY RABBI LAZER BRODY

There was a famine in the land, and Abram descended to Egypt (Bereishit 12:10). Our forefather Avraham's (Abraham) life is a saga of one continuous struggle with never-ending tests of faith. Hashem commands him to leave his homeland and to make the difficult journey to the promised but unknown land of Canaan. Shortly after his arrival in Canaan – the future Land of Israel - Avraham finds himself in the midst of a severe famine. He has no choice but to pack up and search for food and water elsewhere. The famine is only the fourth in the series of Avraham's ten severe tests of faith (according to Rashi). One might ask, "Why must Hashem test Avraham's faith ten times? Why are the tests so difficult, from persecution and skirting with death in a fiery furnace to the Akeida, when he was asked to ritually sacrifice his only son? Doesn't Hashem know that Avraham's faith is steadfast? Hashem knows exactly how Avraham will react – with perfect, simple, innocent, and unblemished faith. The tests are not for Hashem's benefit, but for Avraham's benefit.

RABBI WEIN ON PARSHAS LECH LECHA

Rashi comments that the Lord assured Avraham that leaving his home and family in Aram and heading to a then unknown destination would somehow be to his benefit and ultimate good. Even though this may appear strange to the casual observer – leaving the known and secure and heading out to wander to an unknown destination – the ways of the Lord are inscrutable and often counter-intuitive to human logic.

RABBI WEIN UNDERRATING TEMPTATION

If there is one lesson that is obvious in studying these few parshiyot that constitute the beginning of our yearly Torah reading it is that temptation and human evil instincts are not easily overcome. They should certainly not be ignored. From the story of Adam and Chava in the Garden of Eden through the stories of Cain and Abel, Noach and his grandson, Canaan, the building of the Tower of Bavel, the fourteen year war of the five kings against the four kings and the behavior of Lot in choosing residence in Sodom over the company of Avraham it seems clear that the evil instinct is usually triumphant in human affairs. It is clear to parents and teachers how difficult it is to raise moral and gracious children and students. This is not a new problem particular to our times - and iPhones. It has always been difficult to do so. King Solomon taught us that “there is nothing new under the sun.” The Torah itself testifies to the fact that “the nature of human beings is evil from the inception of youth.” So the problems that affect the world constantly are personal and not institutional. The problems that arise regarding religious observances and children at risk, etc. are personal and individual – and relate to those children who are tempted obviously by the glitter of the sin that rules the outside world. Though schools and teachers, yeshivot and mentors are far from perfect – they also are only human beings. Changing curriculum, institutions and even personnel is not a guaranteed panacea.

RAV SHLOMO CARLEBACH PARSHAS LECH LECHA 5773

Just Cause Of Me I want you to open your hearts. When the Jews walked into Israel with Yehoshua, all the Jews together did it together. When was there this holiness that one Jew came all by himself? Avraham Avinu. Avraham Avinu was mamesh one Jew going in all by himself. I want you to know, there was one more Jew who did it all by himself, Moshe Rabbeinu seeing the holy land. So between Avraham and Moshe Rabbeinu, gevalt is the holy Land holy. A lot of people live in Israel but they don’t see the land anymore. A lot of people see the land and they are not taken by it. You know what happens? A lot of people come here and they get swallowed up. The Gemara says (Pesachim 117b) Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya’akov are standing before G-d and they are asking G-d who will be the most important one before Mashiach is coming. So G-d says to Avraham, b’cha chosmi, in you is my seal, the final sealing will be with you, and this has millions of meanings. But right now, I want you to know that this means that before Mashiach is coming, a yidele will come to Eretz Yisrael and he will know that it all depends on him. It will be like Avraham Avinu is coming to Eretz Yisrael.

YWN Israel: Tefilos Requested for Small Child

Tefilos are requested for a Har Nof, Yerushalayim toddler, נתנאל ישועה בן אביגיל, who fell from a fifth floor window from his Shaulzon Street home on Sunday evening 12 Cheshvan 5773. When HaChovesh Har Nof EMS personnel arrived on the scene the child was conscious and B’chasdei Hashem is listed in moderate condition, not worse. He was transported to the trauma unit of Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in a paramedic ambulance with internal injuries. It appears the child safety gate dislodged as the child looked out, leading to the tragic accident. Police confirm it appears the safety gate gave way. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

It behooves us to say a Tefiloh that this Gevuros should be of Chesed and not Din. One of our Kehilla pointed out to me that today is 13 days in Cheshvan. The corresponding Tehillim for this “day of the month” is “Kapitol 69” please look for it and say it, the Metaphor is The onslaught of water which looks to drown me the nimshal Dovid Hamelech in his prophecy bemoans Klal Yisroel’s plight in Golus (compares it to high waters) and Davens for our speedy redemption. How timely and appropriate for our time and day. In Addition a day like today, hopefully an extra day off with the children at home gives us many opportunities to “catch up” on many things; including Homework, learning, quality time etc. Think about coming to shul with your son today. What lesson and memory would you create for a lifetime of the eternity of Torah under any and all circumstances. The shul is open for Torah and Tefiloh with nice attendance. Jewish Mother's Day Rachel & the 11th of Cheshvan

One of the most important days in the month of Cheshvan is the 11th, which commemorates the day of passing of our matriarch Rachel. Rachel was Jacob's most beloved wife and was the principal of his household and thus the principal of the entire house of Israel. From the first day of the year, the 1st day of Tishrei, the 11th day of Cheshvan is the 41st day. 41 is the numerical value of the Hebrew word "eim," which means "mother," thus the 11th of Cheshvan is truly the Jewish Mother's Day.

BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5773 PARSHAS NOACH

Parshas Noach contains the account of one of the most (in)famous cooperative efforts in human history: the (abortive) construction of the Migdal Bavel. The Torah makes no mention of how such cooperation was achieved, and it is particularly striking that no emperor, king or leader of any sort is mentioned. All of humanity apparently managed to agree on the enterprise and coordinate their efforts on their own, and so successfully that Hashem himself acknowledged that "nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do". In this journal we explore the general questions of whether and how a community, or any multiplicity of people, with common needs or goals can ensure that everyone involved contributes fairly to the common good, both initially, as well as after the fact when some have expended their own resources and are demanding compensation from the others who will benefit from their efforts.(AUDIO HERE) PRINT VERSION HERE

RABBI WEIN ON PARSHAS NOACH

The opening parshiyot of the Torah portray a rather dismal picture of the human race and of our world generally. Everything noble and worthwhile seems to have spun away in a flood of vice, avarice, and murder. And this type of human behavior seems to have filtered down to the other forms of life on the planet as well. The great flood described in this week’s parsha can therefore be seen, so to speak, as a do-over, by God, of the time of creation. We all know the feeling that comes upon us when after working on a project for a period of time, when we become convinced of the project’s failure and are aware of the need to start all over again from the beginning, we must discard all that had previously been invested in the endeavor.

RABBI WEIN POST – HOLIDAY TENSIONS

For the past two months much of the Jewish world, both public and private, has been on hold. Important decisions, as well as matters that in retrospect are now seen as perhaps less important, were postponed. “Call me after the holidays,” has been this rabbi’s mantra to requests made of him during this time period. But now it is after the holidays and the crunch of the past postponements and procrastinations have descended in full force. In my rabbinic career I have found that the month after the holidays of Tishrei to be the most dangerous time for family relations, partnership and monetary issues, communal disagreements and personal piques. It is as though the cover has been removed from the pressure cooker of the months of Elul and Tishrei, the time of personal introspection and attempted spiritual devotion.

RABBI SHLOMO CARLEBACH Parashat Noach תשע"ג

Rav kook’s letter Here is a Torah from Rav Kook, which is mind blowing. We always think that when people act bad, they must be really bad people. The truth is a lot of them wanted to be so good, but they realized they needed someone like the Ba'al Shem to turn them around. A lot of kids want so much to learn, but they don’t have the right Rebbe and they become wild.
