[Aneinu] "In memoriam Eyal, Gilad and Naftali" by Rabbi Sacks
This past Shabbat we read the parsha of Chukkat with its almost incomprehensible commandment of the red heifer whose ashes mixed with “living water” purified those who had been in contact with death so that they could enter the Mishkan, symbolic home of the glory of God. Almost incomprehensible but not entirely so.
The mitzvah of the parah adumah, the red heifer, was a protest against the religions of the ancient world that glorified death. Death for the Egyptians was the realm of the spirits and the gods. The pyramids were places where, it was believed, the spirit of the dead Pharaoh ascended to heaven and joined the immortals.
The single most striking thing about the Torah and Tanakh in general is its almost total silence on life after death. We believe in it profoundly. We believe in olam haba (the world to come), Gan Eden (paradise), and techiyat hametim (the resurrection of the dead). Yet Tanakh speaks about these things only sparingly and by allusion. Why so?

Rabbi Kanievsky: Prayers for Murdered Teens Weren't in Vain
By Yaakov Levi
First Publish: 6/30/2014, 11:29 PM
Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, considered one of the foremost rabbinical authority in the hareidi yeshiva world, said Monday night that despite the fact that kidnapped Israeli teens Eyal Yifrah (19), Naftali Frenkel (16), and Gilad Sha'ar (16) were found murdered, the hundreds of thousands of prayers that had been recited over the past several weeks for their return were not uttered in vain. In their deaths, he said, they brought many Jews closer to G-d.
“They had a great merit to spiritually strengthen thousands of Jews,” the rabbi said. “It is a great merit for their souls.”
[Aneinu] MESSAGE FROM RAV PLOTNIK, ANEINU INT"L RAV
ANEINU
KLAL YISROEL's HEART IS BROKEN WITH THE TRAGIC NEWS THAT THE BODIES OF THE 3 YESHIVA BOCHURIM KIDNAPPED 2 WEEKS AGO HAVE BEEN FOUND.
We asked Aneinu's Rav, Rabbi Henoch Plotnik to give us divre chizuk in light of this tragedy
"No doubt everyone is beside themselves with grief. We all need chizuk and to harness the power of all the sense of responsibility to the klal and the ability to look beyond our outer differences to come together.
We shouldn't wait for nisyonos like this to bring out the best in us.
If I may, I would offer our membership one thought that gave me some strength and admiration for how great people have such different perspective.
When Rav Shmuel Birnbaum zt"l lost his second son, Rav Leibel zt"l,the rebbetzin was understandably broken as she was at his bedside when he left this world. The great Rosh yeshiva joined her after shabbos (she had spent shabbos in the hospital with her son)and told her,"remember there are three partners in our child. The third partner says this is good!"
We cannot imagine such gevuras hanefesh at a time like that, but we must remain steadfast in our emunah that only Hashem knows what we need and what is tov. He is the Av harachman, the source and continued compassionate father. We accept his gezeiros, difficult as they are to bear,as absolute defferment to what only he knows is tov.
One important point to remember:
These bochurim, having died al kiddush hashem, for no other reason than their being Jews, are now afforded the most honorable places under the "kisei hakavod" as is brought in our seforim. They are experiencing unimaginable joy, we need not be sad for their lot. Our tza'ar is so strong but should only bring us to higher levels in our own avodah
Boruch dayan emes.
Rabbi Henoch Plotnik
[Aneinu] Baruch Dayan Ha"Emes
With unbearable sorrow. I inform you that the bodies of Yaakov Naphtali, Gilad Michael and Ayal have been found buried in a field in Chevron. Our hearts have been torn asunder. Am Yisrael is in mourning. Please, Hashem, we beg of you to please bring the geulah shlema and end the suffering of your beloved children.

[Aneinu] Good News
Rav Binyamin Elyashiv, grandson of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l, admits that after being pressured by relatives of one of the abducted boys and by other gedolim he performed the goral hagra this past Monday. Rav Binyamin Elyashiv is also the grandson of Rav Aryeh Levin, who had also performed the goral hagra.
The result of the goral performed by Rav Elyashiv was a passuk regarding Shimshon that indicates the hostages are alive and in the area of Hebron, with positive and optimistic overtures.

Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein: Shmiras Shabbos Will Help the Captives
Am Yisrael in Israel and throughout the Diaspora stands united in tefilos for the release of the captive youths, taken hostage on Thursday the eve of 15 Sivan by Hamas terrorists. A week has passed and despite herculean efforts by the IDF and other security agencies, the location of the hostages remains a mystery.
During the course of the week a number of gedolei yisrael have spoken out calling for increased limudim, tefilos and adherence to mitzvos.
Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita spoke of the need for increased shmiras Shabbos and many rabbonim are calling on the tzibur to accept Shabbos early in the merit of the young bnei yeshiva who are being held captive.

Talmidim of the rav add the rav plans to request from the families to make an appeal to Am Yisrael to increase adherence to shmiras Shabbos. The rav says everything must to done to bring more Jews towards adherence to Shabbos.
The rav concludes,

Techeiles in Contemporary Times
By: Rabbi Yisroel Barkin
In this week's Parsha, we learn about the Mitzva of Tzitzis. This Mitzva has two components, one being lavan (white strings) and the other, techeiles (blue strings dyed with the blood of the chilazon). The identity of the chilazon and/or the dyeing process needed for techeiles was lost between the conclusion of the Amoraic period and the beginning of the Geonic period. Many theories, including the Arab conquest of 639 CE and a decree of the Roman Empire against its use, are given to explain the cause of its loss.

Eyal ben Iris Teshurah This week’s Parshah details the disastrous mission of the meraglim – the spies that Moshe sent to scout out the Land of Israel, and the catastrophic repercussions of the bad report that they delivered. The whole episode begs an important question. If, as Moshe tells us (Devarim 1:23), he thought it a good idea to send them, why then did he criticize Klal Yisroel for requesting the mission? Was it a good idea to send them or a bad one?

Moshe Rabbenu sends twelve spies with specific instructions to reconnoiter the land Hashem has promised Bnei Yisroel. When the spies return, ten of them issue a very negative report, frightening the nation. Joshua and Caleb then try their best to calm Bnei Yisroel and allay their fears. They tell the people, “… the land is very, very good,” urging them to trust in Hashem and not be afraid. As we know, Joshua and Caleb were not successful.
All twelve of these spies were great men, yet ten of them sinned and caused others to sin. How could they have fallen so low, and how were the words of Joshua and Caleb an appropriate, albeit ineffective, response to the words of the other spies?

It was perhaps the single greatest collective failure of leadership in the Torah. Ten of the spies whom Moses had sent to spy out the land came back with a report calculated to demoralize the nation:
“We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large . . . We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are . . . The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height . . . We seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

PLEASE HAVE IN MIND THE KIDNAPPED BOYS WHILE LEARNING THIS 1. Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devorah 2. Gilad Michael ben Bat Galim 3. Eyal ben Iris Teshurah
Our Torah portion ends with one of the great commands of Judaism – tsitsit, the fringes we wear on the corner of our garments as a perennial reminder of our identity as Jews and our obligation to keep the Torah’s commands:
God spoke to Moses, telling him to speak to the Israelites and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments for all generations. Let them attach a cord of blue to the fringe at each corner. That shall be your fringe: look at it and recall all the commandments of the Lord and observe them, so that you do not stray after your heart and eyes which in the past have led you to immorality. You will thus remember and keep all my commandments and be holy to your God.
So central is this command, that it became the third paragraph of the Shema, the supreme declaration of Jewish faith. I once heard the following commentary from my teacher, Rabbi Dr Nahum Rabinovitch.
He began by pointing out some of the strange features of the command. On the one hand the sages said that the command of tsitsit is equal to all the other commands together, as it is said: “Look at it and recall all the commandments of the Lord and observe them.” It is thus of fundamental significance.
On the other hand, it is not absolutely obligatory. It is possible to avoid the command of fringes altogether by never wearing a garment of four or more corners. Maimonides rules: “Even though one is not obligated to acquire a [four-cornered] robe and wrap oneself in it in order to [fulfil the command of]tsitsit, it is not fitting for a pious individual to exempt himself from this command” (Laws of Tsitsit, 3: 11). It is important and praiseworthy but not categorical. It is conditional: if you have such a garment, then you must put fringes on it. Why so?

The episode of the spies has rightly puzzled commentators throughout the centuries. How could they have got it so wrong? The land, they said, was as Moses had promised. It was indeed “flowing with milk and honey.” But conquering it was impossible. “The people who live there are powerful, and the cities fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of the giant there … We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are … All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the titans there … We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we seemed in theirs” (Num. 13: 28-33).
They were terrified of the inhabitants of the land, and entirely failed to realise that the inhabitants were terrified of them. Rahab, the prostitute in Jericho, tells the spies sent by Joshua a generation later: “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you … our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below” (Joshua 2: 10-11).
The truth was the exact opposite of the spies’ report. The inhabitants feared the Israelites more than the Israelites feared the inhabitants. We hear this at the start of the story of Bilaam: “Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites.” Earlier the Israelites themselves had sung at the Red Sea: “The people of Canaan will melt away; terror and dread will fall on them” (Ex. 15: 15-16).
How then did the spies err so egregiously? Did they misinterpret what they saw?
RAV KOOK ON Shelach PART 2: Offering Wine and Flour
PLEASE HAVE IN MIND THE KIDNAPPED BOYS WHILE LEARNING THIS 1. Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devorah 2. Gilad Michael ben Bat Galim 3. Eyal ben Iris Teshurah
Bringing an offering in the Temple requires more than just a bull, goat, or sheep. In Num. 15:1-16, the Torah commands that korbanot be accompanied by wine libations, called Nesachim, and flour offerings, called Menachot. What was the purpose of these additional offerings of wine and flour?
RAV KOOK ON Shlach:PART 1 The Sin of Tzelofchad
PLEASE HAVE IN MIND THE KIDNAPPED BOYS WHILE LEARNING THIS 1. Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devorah 2. Gilad Michael ben Bat Galim 3. Eyal ben Iris Teshurah
"Our father died in the desert... He died because of his own sin, and he had no sons." (Num. 27:3)
So begins the request of the daughters of Tzelofchad. Since there were no sons in the family, the daughters wanted to know: may we inherit his portion in the Land of Israel? Their question stumped Moses, and was referred to God Himself.
The Torah doesn't tell us, but we are curious nonetheless: what was the sin for which Tzelofchad deserved to die? The text seems to imply that his transgression was an unusual one — "He died because of his own sin."

YWN Ezra Shaar Visits with Rav Chaim Shlita
Mr. Ezra Shaar, a grandfather of captive Gilad Shaar visited with HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita seeking a bracha from the tzaddik. According to the Kikar Shabbos report, the rav listened to Mr. Shaar attentively and responded in a pained voice “השם יעזור, שיצאו במהרה מצרה ומשביה” .
When Mr. Shaar asked what the family members can do they were told to increase their limud and Yiras Shomayim, instructing the men to learn hilchos shvi’is ahead of the upcoming shmitah year. Women should be stringent to light Shabbos candles before the required time, to accept Shabbos earlier than required.
The gadol hador concluded ”שהקדוש ברוך הוא יעזור שבזכות כל הפעולות הללו יראו ישועות בקרוב”

[Aneinu] Learn for #EyalGiladNaftali
Dear Friend,
Jews across Israel and the world are consumed with worry and fear for the lives of Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Frenkel, the three boys kidnapped by terrorists in Gush Etzion this past week, on Thursday, June 12, 2014. Since then, the Israel Defense Forces and intelligence establishment have launched Operation Brother's Keeper and are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to locate the teens and, with God’s help, return them to their parents unharmed.
Notwithstanding that ongoing heroic operation, the Jewish nation, since its inception, has known that in addition to such efforts on the ground, it must also “grasp the tools of their ancestors,” and appeal to God through Torah, tefillah (prayer), and ma’asim tovim (good deeds).
To that end, the Orthodox Union, with its international youth movement, NCSY, and its Department of Community Engagement and Synagogue Services, and in partnership with Bnei Akiva and the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA), is launching a “virtual vigil” - an around-the-clock schedule of learning, prayer, and mitzvot, performed by OU/NCSY members and partners throughout the world. It is the hope of all involved that through these earnest efforts in the merit of Gilad Michoel ben Bat Galim, Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devorah and Eyal ben Iris Teshura, Hashem will see fit to bring them home safely and quickly.
Individuals interested in participating can go to www.ncsy.org/bring-back-boys and fill out a simple form to select a day and a 30-minute slot, and identify what activity they are committing to for that time. While it is our deepest desire that this campaign will become unnecessary even as it is launched, it is also our intent to continue this project non-stop until our boys are brought home.
Thank you.

JI Gad Elbaz & Beni Elbaz: Esh Shel Mashiach [Offical Music Video]
Israeli superstar Gad Elbaz is literally on fire in his latest music video, titled Esh Shel Mashiach. Following on the heels of Elbaz’s blockbuster single, Hashem Melech, released last summer, Esh Shel Mashiach is a feel-good song that reflects Elbaz’s own passion for life and the infectious enthusiasm he spreads everywhere he goes.
In this newly released music video, we follow Elbaz through the final countdown before the New York segment of his latest world tour as he spends a whirlwind day touring New York City before appearing onstage with his legendary father, Benny Elbaz, at Brooklyn’s Millenium Theater.
Directed by Danny Finkleman and produced by Shlomi Cohen, with a guest appearance by Benny Elbaz, Esh Shel Mashiach is an upbeat anthem that explodes with energy, expressing our overwhelming yearning for the final redemption. Elbaz, with his enormous talent, shines in this video which is yet another link in the long chain of musical gems that Elbaz has bequeathed to music lovers worldwide, each one a melodious message dedicated to uniting the Jewish people through music.
