YWN 2 Year Old Pulled From Pool In Monticello – 3rd Near Drowning In Catskills In 24 Hours: For the third time in 24 hours update

For the third time in under 24 hours, a child was pulled from a swimming pool. Sources tell YWN Catskills, that two children, a 22-month old and a 3-year-old, managed to “wiggle their way” through a pool gate, and entered the swimming pool in Cold-Spring Bungalows in Monticello. People heard the 3-year-old screaming, and jumped over the fence to help. The 22-month-old child was pulled from the bottom of the pool in cardiac arrest. Catskills Hatzolah worked on the child for close to an hour, and managed to regain a pulse. The child was flown via Lifenet 75 to Westchester Trauma Center in Valhalla, NY, where he is listed in critical condition. On Friday, YWN Catskills reported about a 14-year-old Bochur who was pulled from a pool in Stolin Camp in Highland NY (Ulster County), and just minutes later a 8-year-old child was pulled from a swimming pool in Ichud Bungalow Colony in Monticello (Sullivan County). The conditions of the two victims from Friday will be updated as soon as we have the information. Please daven for this child Zev Arieh ben Nechama, he needs rachmei shomayim! UPDATE: The condition of the victim from Stolin camp is B”H stable.

Tomorrow: The First Yahrtzeit of מרן פוסק הדור הגאון הגדול רבי יוסף שלום אלישיב זצ”ל • Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l

One year ago tomorrow, Klal Yisroel was informed the petirah of the posek hador, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l, at the age of 102. Rav Elyashiv had been hospitalized at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital in Yerushalayim for some six months. Thousands davened for Rav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha, but the gadol hador was taken from our midst on 28 Tammuz, ending a life of complete and utter dedication to Torah and Klal Yisroel.

JEWISH ACTION SUMMER 2013 The Great Sar HaTorah by JA Mag

A Tribute to Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv on His First Yahrtzeit A few weeks after I arrived in Eretz Yisrael in 1974 to learn in Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim, I received a heartfelt letter from a kollel fellow I knew. The letter detailed the difficulties that he and his wife were undergoing, as her last three pregnancies had ended in miscarriages and doctors could not identify the cause. The couple had heard about a mekubal in Netivot who dispensed bottles of water rumored to prevent miscarriages. Since I was the only one he knew living in Eretz Yisrael at the time, he asked if I could travel to Netivot, obtain a few bottles of water from the mekubal and send them to him. In those days, a round trip from Yerushalayim to Netivot required at least six hours. Moreover, with the inevitable long lines at the mekubal’s home, I could expect the trip to take all day. I wasn’t sure what to do: Should I give up an entire day of learning in yeshivah for this act of chesed? When I asked the mashgiach of the yeshivah, Rabbi Avrohom Kanarek, for advice, he recommended that I present the she’eilah to a posek in Meah Shearim who at the time was not known outside of the small circle of scholars in Yerushalayim. His name? Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.

JEWISH ACTION SUMMER 2013 Discovering Rav Elyashiv by Yosef Gavriel Bechhofer

Since his recent petirah, much has been said and written about Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, zt”l, one of the greatest posekim of the post-World War II era. Nevertheless, despite his very public profile—as awe-inspiring as it is—Rav Elyashiv was a very private person. Although Rav Elyashiv was surrounded by many people—even great talmidei chachamim—they convey to us much more of what he said in extemporaneous conversation, and much less of his thought process. Rav Elyashiv thus remains very much a “closed book.” This is notwithstanding the volumes of Rav Elyashiv’s writings that have been published, as he did not write in a systematic manner. Moreover, even the teshuvot that have been published are only available as edited by his talmidim, who have cut sections out and inserted many ellipses in the remaining sections, dimming whatever light they might have shed on Rav Elyashiv’s derech. Outlined below is just one of the numerous pathways that together comprise his derech—Rav Elyashiv’s approach to issues of public policy, both historical and contemporary, as reflected in his responsa.

OU TORAH ONE+ONE Proverbs 1:7 By Rabbi Jack Abramowitz

יִרְאַת ה' רֵאשִׁית דָּעַת חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר אֱוִילִים בָּזוּ The fear of Hashem is the start of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Rashi compares having proper awe of G-d to terumah, the portion of produce given to a kohein. (The word “reishis” in our verse can mean “the start of,” or it can refer to those priestly gifts.) Like terumah is of one’s best produce, awe of G-d is the finest portion of one’s knowledge. Before one can truly acquire knowledge, he must first have awe of G-d and open his heart to be receptive to wisdom. Fools who have no regard for G-d cannot hope to internalize these messages.
