Jeremiah – Chapter 52

Nach Yomi
Jeremiah – Chapter 52
Torat Imecha Nach Yomi

The Exile to Babylonia

Tzidkiyahu became king of Judah when he was 21 years old. He did acts of evil like his predecessor Yehoyakim had done. G-d inspired him to rebel against Nebuchadnezzar, who had placed him on the throne, which led to Tzidkiyahu's exile. In the ninth year of Tzidkiyahu's reign, on the tenth day of the month of Teves, Nebuchadnezzar's army started the siege of Jerusalem. The siege lasted two years, until the famine was so severe that there was no food left. The city was breached and the soldiers fled from the Chaldeans.

The Chaldeans pursued and overtook Tzidkiyahu in Jericho. They brought him to Nebuchadnezzar, to account for his rebellion. Nebuchadnezzar slaughtered Tzidkiyahu's sons in his presence, then blinded him. He had Tzidkiyahu bound in chains and brought to Babylonia, where he was thrown in prison. On the Ninth of Av, Nebuchadnezzar's deputy, Nebuzaradan, burned the Temple and the king's palace in Jerusalem.

Nebuzaradan exiled some of the poor people who remained in Jerusalem, those who had already defected, and the people remaining in the other cities of Judah. But Nebuzaradan left some of the poor people behind to work the land.

The Chaldeans broke the copper pillars of the Temple, the stands and the copper "sea," and the Temple utensils and instruments, carrying off the copper to Babylonia. They also took the silver and gold utensils. Nebuzaradan took Seraya and Tzefanya, the High Priest and the Deputy High Priest, into custody, along with their officers. From the city, Nebuzaradan took a variety of officers of the court and the army. He brought them to Nebuchadnezzar, who executed them.

In the initial wave of Babylonia's attack, in the reign of Yehoyachin, 3,023 people were exiled from Judah; in the second wave, at the time of Tzidkiyahu, an additional 832 people were exiled from Jerusalem. Nebuzaradan exiled an additional 745 more people.

When Nebuchadnezzar died, his successor, Evil-Merodach, released Yehoyachin from prison. He placed Yehoyachin over other captive kings who were in Babylonia. Yehoyachin resumed wearing regular clothes instead of his prison uniform and started eating his meals with Evil-Merodach; Yehoyachin received his meals from the king of Babylonia for the rest of his life.

UNIONS AND STRIKES IN HALACHA

Case: I am a school bus driver in a large Jewish community. The other bus drivers are planning a walk-out as a push for higher wages and better benefits.

Question: I'm not interested, do I have to play along?  Does a worker have to go along with a strike?

Rabbi Boruch Fried

Answer:
Surprisingly, yes. In general, Halacha recognizes freedom of contract, and people can usually choose to obligate themselves as they wish. If the worker is happy with the wages and working conditions, no one can force them not to enter into that agreement.

An exception is found in the Halachos of takanah and minhag. The Gemara in Bava Basra [9b] teaches that members of a city, or members of a specific trade, can enact regulations that are binding on all the members. They can even penalize those who don't go along. The only place where these regulations are not binding is where a city has an appointed Talmid Chacham to oversee the regulations. In those cities, even if members of a trade try to enact regulations, it is not binding without the Talmid Chacham's consent.

Rav Moshe [CHM 1:59] takes for granted that our cities do not have such a Talmid Chacham. Although the Rama [CHM 231:28] requires the agreement of all the members to create regulations, Rav Moshe understands that to mean a majority. Therefore, if most of the bus drivers in your city agree to strike, they can insist that all bus drivers do so as well.

Dear OU Supporter,

We find ourselves just a few short hours away from Kol Nidre, as we reach the apex of the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah. It's been a difficult year for so many of us, but with a new year begins a fresh opportunity to look forward and improve ourselves.

Can we set aside a few minutes for Torah learning? Can we have a little bit more compassion for our friends and family members when they need our support? Can we make more time to give something back to our communities?

Along that same line of thinking, the OU is focusing on the positive going into 5781. We want to continue our great work, with your help, and impact even more people. It starts with you – become an OU member or renew your membership today.

Let's create even greater opportunities for individuals with disabilities, let's bring stronger Jewish identity to college students on secular campuses, let's respond quicker and with more resources to those impacted by natural disasters.

Please join us as an OU member or renew your membership today and partner with us as we continue to stay positive in the days, weeks and months ahead.

My sincere wishes for a g'mar chatimah tovah,

Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb,
Executive Vice President, Emeritus

P.S. In addition to the invaluable help you'll prove with your gift, OU members receive a subscription to Jewish Action magazine, and the popular OU pocket calendar diary.

SUPPORT PROJECT LIKKUTEI SICHOS
Vov Tishrei - Erev Yom Kippur,

Immediately after the Rebbe's mother, Rebbetzin Chana passed away, the Rebbe began to Farbrengen every Shabbos, and expound on the Rashi(s) of that week, which have become known as the "Rashi Sichos" and are the basis of many of the Sichos in Likkutei Sichos.

As we come from Vov Tishrei, it is most appropriate to increase and intensify our learning of these Sichos, and if you have not done so, to join Project Likkutei Sichos.

As it is Erev Yom Kippur, we take this moment to wish you and your family a Gmar Chasima Tova.

May this be a year of gezunt, parnassa, and Nachas - all in great abundance, and may this be the year that we merit to hear תורה חדשה מאתי תצא with the coming of Moshiach NOW!

SICHOS FOR THE WEEK OF
September 27, 2020 - ט' תשרי תשפ׳׳א

Since there are no Sichos for Sukkos in Chelek Yud Daled, we are utilizing this week to "catch up" on some past Sichos, and make them relevant to Sukkos this year.
חלק יד • וילך • שיחה ב
לקוח את ספר התורה הזאת
The meaning of the word לקוח asa command although it is written with the vowels that make it into a Lashon Makor (infinitive) according to Dikduk. With a powerful lesson on Teshuva how it must permeate all aspects of our soul.
חלק יא • פקודי • שיחה ב
אלה פקודי המשכן משכן העדות
Hamishkan Mishkan twice referring to the Beis Hamikdash that was destroyed twice. Its one and the same Mishkan, and although the yidden sinned, it took a long time before it was actually destroyed. A lesson in treating others with patience despite their sins.
With Simchas Torah around the corner, we are ramping up a campaign that Shuls should dedicate a hakafa to Project Likkutei Sichos, and celebrate those who have been learning, and those who will join from Shabbos Breishis (Chelek YUD).

Can your shul join this initiative and bring on new people to join the project?

This is the ultimate celebration of Simchas Torah - to increase in the learning of the Rebbe's Torah!
PIRSUM RISHON - KSAV YAS KODESH
Since we didn't send this out last week, we are including it here.

Project Likkutei Sichos is honored to release another edition of Kisvei yad - had-written edits by the Rebbe on the Sicha Haazinu Beis in Chelek 14.

This collection, including some never previously published documents, including all the pages of the first round of edits, some of the pages of the second round of edits, as well as some of the Rebbe's handwritten responses to the question posed by those preparing the Sicha.

These incredible gems give us a tiny glimpse behind the curtain of the Rebbe's involvement in Likkutei Sichos, and how precious these Sichos, and especially the learning of these sichos, was, and is, to the Rebbe.

We are certain that they will also increase our Chayos and Geshmak in learning and delving into the Sichos, to continue to give the Rebbe only nachas from us.

Thank you to all those who make this possible. May the Zechus of all the Torah learning stand you in good stead.
