Hindsight is 2020: The Agudah Year in Review
It is said that hindsight is 20/20, and this year we have the opportunity to look at 2020 in hindsight. For us at the Agudah the year started with the 13th Global Siyum HaShas, and none of us could've been prepared for what was to follow. Join us in looking back at some of the work done by Agudath Israel of America this past year from the Siyum HaShas, a response to a Global Pandemic, Virtual Convention, Supreme Court Victory and more.
The New Covid Relief Bill: What it means for You
Click here or above to watch a replay of the webinar.
Over 5,500 pages of legislation, PUA, PPP, stimulus checks, what is it all and what does it mean for you? On Wednesday, December 30, Agudath Israel and Roth&Co held a webinar to provide the public with information on the new CARES Act that was signed into law earlier this week.

Rabbi Abba Cohen, Vice President for Government Affairs, Washington Director and Counsel of Agudath Israel, also provided insight on the setting in which this bill was written and passed.  Rabbi Cohen highlighted some of the work done by the Agudah with members of the government and other non-profit organizations, specifically in the areas of direct payments, private school education, charitable deductions, and benefits for children.

In a session moderated by Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, Director of Government Affairs, Agudath Israel of Illinois, Ahron Golding Esq., Tax Controversy Attorney at Roth&Co, discussed the details of the bill, how it can affect you and your business, what differentiates it from the the first CARES Act, who qualifies and how to qualify for PPP loan forgiveness, unemployment benefits, employee retention benefits, how to quantify loss, tax deductibility, direct payments, and more.

If any of this applies to you, the webinar and a written have been made available for the public to watch and read by clicking here

MAY ONE CANCEL ON A PLUMBER WHILE HE IS ON HIS WAY OVER?

Question: Someone calls a plumber to make a repair in his home. A short while later, the plumber calls back and says that he is in his car on the way over, and will be there in about ten minutes. During those few minutes, the homeowner decides that he can do the job on his own. Is he allowed to call the plumber and cancel on him?

Rav Eliezer Cohen

Answer: Once a worker begins doing a job, the employer may not terminate him. If he does, he is obligated to pay him in full.
When a worker starts traveling to the job site, he is halachically considered to have begun the job; therefore, the employer would not be permitted to back out on him once he took to the road and, if he does, he would be responsible to pay him for the full job.

If the worker is only coming to give an estimate, that is not considered as if he began working, and the employer would be allowed to back out; however, if he is traveling to start working on the job, it is as if he has already begun to work and the homeowner would not be permitted to cancel on him.
