Subject: Why Our Newsletter is Changing

TUES, APRIL 9, 2024 | 1 NISSAN 5784

Dear Agudah News Reader,

We've been thinking about how we can help you more.

Because while times have changed, and how we're doing things has changed, everything Agudah is and everything Agudah does is about one central thing: Giving your Jewish values a voice, and realizing our collective vision of a vibrant frum Chicago.

So we're revamping our look, making our website easier for you to find what you need,

and updating what we feature each week because we want to bring you in more.

We want you not just to know how we're building our voice and our vision, but to get a chance to be part of it.

✔️ To see behind the scenes.

✔️ To discover a program that you never realized could help you.

✔️ To share your thoughts, your needs, your valuable input.

Thank you again for being part of our community until now; for caring about Agudah, and for caring about Chicago frum living. We're honored and grateful to have you here.

Agudah Congratulates Burke, Analyzes Voter Turnout

Agudath Israel congratulates Justice Eileen O'Neill Burke on her victorious primary campaign for Cook County State's Attorney. Burke met with community leaders and Alderman Debra Silverstein at Agudath Israel's headquarters during the campaign and addressed concerns unique to the Orthodox Jewish community.

As one of the closest local primary elections in modern times, the race's outcome took nearly two weeks to be called while mail and provisional ballots were counted under the supervision of observers from both campaigns. Burke beat Clayton Harris III by only 0.3 percentage points, or approximately 1,500 votes.

Turnout was abysmally low throughout the Chicago area: only 18% in the suburbs and 25% in the city. Preliminary data indicate that turnout in the frum community was approximately 28%, slightly higher than the city average but still well below the record-setting Orthodox turnout in the last few elections. Nevertheless, it does seem that the Orthodox Jewish

community, which casted thousands of votes in the city and suburbs, far exceeded the margin of victory in this contest.

Burke, who will face Republican Bob Fioretti in November, is expected to win handily in the general election.

Yahalom Evening for Parents

Rabbi Yakov Danishefsky, LCSW, addressed Yahalom parents last Sunday evening at the home of Tuviyah and Hadassa Spector. His discussion of "Finding Internal Seder as we approach Pesach "was both thought provoking and practical. Using the seder as a springboard, Rabbi Danishefsky was able to give parents new perspectives on navigating through challenging circumstances.

Shaimos Collection

For close to 3 decades, one of the local Agudah's most popular Pre-Pesach activities has been its annual Shaimos Collection. At first, reflecting the size of the Jewish community, the shaimos collected would fit into the area of 4 donated grave sites. However, as our community b"H grew, so did the size of the amount of shaimos dropped off. This year, in spite of a steady rain, over a dozen pallets of shaimos were collected. Realizing the growing need for proper shaimos genizah, the Agudah also offers shaimos drop-off throughout the year on the first and last Sunday of each month. Last year alone, the shaimos collected as part of the Ner Reuven Shaimos Project, saw over 50 pallets (over 2500 boxes) given proper genizah k'halacha. For the last few years, aside from shaimos drop-off, community members were also able to avail themselves of Document Shredding and Electronic Recycling services at the location of the shaimos collection.

Maot Chitim

This past Sunday, the Agudah held its annual Pesach food distribution program in partnership with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago. Over 600 families in our community benefited from this program, which includes assisting with their Yom Tov preparation and alleviating some of the financial costs associated with Pesach. Even through challenging and difficult weather conditions, It was a huge success as families were able to easily drive through our pick-up system and orders were placed in their cars, the whole process taking less than 30 minutes. We extend a big thank you to all of the volunteers, community members and office staff who helped make this event run so smoothly. We once again thank Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago for partnering with us in offering this helpful program to so many families in our community.
