Introduction

It's often difficult to comprehend why charging interest is forbidden – after all, it seems fair that one should be compensated for losing access to his money by lending to another who will benefit from the loan. The Torah seems to answer this by saying "and your brother shall [be allowed to] live together with you." As sensible as it seems, our feelings of brotherhood to each other require us to lend to each other altruistically

Points to Ponder

• Can a Jewish lawyer or broker facilitate an interest-bearing loan if the parties will be doing it anyway?

• Are there any ribbis restrictions when the lender or borrower is not Jewish?

• If the ribbis restrictions are somehow related to Jewish brotherhood, do they apply equally when the lender or borrower is not religious?

• Is it a problem of lo sechanaim for a Jew to grant an interest-free loan to a non-Jew or an

irreligious Jew?
