Introduction

The Rabbanan forbade various forms of commercial agreements because they can be perceived as loans with ribbis. The issur of Pesika refers to prepayment for goods or services. If the buyer stands to gain from paying early, the purchase money can be viewed as a loan to the seller with a benefit being given in return. Se'ah B'Seah refers to borrowing a commodity measure for measure. If the value goes up in the interim, the lender will be getting more value than what he lent, giving the appearance of ribbis.

Points to Ponder

• Is it ever permitted to offer potential buyers an "early bird discount" if they pay early?

• If items have a set market price, can one put down money and take delivery at a later date?

• How are commodities defined – can one borrow stocks or foreign currencies to be paid back at a later date with an equal amount?

• Can one borrow small items like eggs or sugar from a neighbor without transgressing the prohibition of se'ah b'seah?
