“In the beginning, HaShem created…” (Genesis 1:1)
“How fortunate are we that Moshe Rabbeinu, of blessed memory, chose for us such a very good portion and gave us the Torah, and began it with: ‘In the beginning, HaShem created the heavens…’ - without any philosophical investigations or proofs, but simply commanded us to believe in HaShem with simple faith alone.” (Rebbe Nachman’s Wisdom, 5)
The main reason a person experiences thoughts of heresy is because he simply does not have the simple faith to believe that HaShem wants him just as he is. A person may generally believe that there is a Creator who created the world, and that there is an Olam HaBah. But when it comes to the personal details—when it becomes about him—that is where things become complicated.
Rebbe Nachman teaches us that this comes about through forgetfulness. The Sitra Achra causes a person to forget about Olam HaBah and lose awareness of its reality. The remedy for this is hisbodedus: when a person speaks to HaShem about himself, he takes every detail of his personal life and turns it toward HaShem. He asks and pleads with HaShem to bring him closer.
This is the clear answer to the heresy that rages within a person and causes him to forget Olam HaBah. In this way, he merits believing in everything he does - that HaShem truly wants him, specifically, and that HaShem wants him precisely in the situation in which he finds himself at that moment.
May it be HaShem’s will that we merit believing in HaShem with simple faith, and believing in ourselves - that HaShem wants us just as we are. And in this merit, may we merit both our personal redemption and the complete redemption. Amen!
