Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Community Alert - Shul Safety Situational Awareness
Please post to alert all Chicagoland shuls:
There was a security incident this morning at a shul on Devon Avenue. An Oriental male, mid-20's, wearing a black zip-up jacket, a black Sephardi style yarmulkah, and tactical boots was attempting to enter the shul. He was clenching a black vinyl bag that protruded out of both sides of his right hand. When confronted he became argumentative that he has the right to enter because Jews permit Jews and gentiles to enter synagogues. I explained that he is not permitted to enter and he must back away from the door and leave. He expressed that he has a list of every synagogue in Chicago, and that he intends to "follow someone into a synagogue and I am here to see the layout of your synagogue." He then unzipped his jacket to reveal a cross and began a rant about his Messianic beliefs. He was again instructed to back away from the door and move away from the building. Instead of listening, he kept his foot in the doorway. I explained that his foot is impeding the ability to close the door. He refused to leave and again asserted his right to enter. At that point, I moved my arm to my pocket and he ran off down the street.
With Rosh Hashana this week, situational awareness is critical.
Please be mindful of your surroundings.
Don't hold the door for, or allow someone you don't recognize to follow you in.
Please alert your shul security team and stay safe.
