PUTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON IMPORTANT JEWISH INFORMATION
THIS MONTH'S YORUCHA TOPIC:
The Bais Din Process
הלכות בית דין '
Week 1 Focus:
הזמנה לדין
Introduction
The initiation of Din Torah is a process in and of itself. When a plaintiff presents himself to a Bais Din
and requests that a summons be sent to a defendant, the Bais Din will follow a specific procedure in
doing so. Otherwise, the defendant can ignore the summons.
Points to Ponder
• How are summonses to Bais Din sent nowadays, and must one respond to them immediately?
• Is a defendant entitled to know the details of the case against him before he arrives at the Din Torah?
• May a defendant delay the scheduling of Din Torah so that he can have time to prepare?
• What is a "siruv", and when is it issued?
