Chicago's 50th Ward Newsletter

October 9, 2020
Dear Neighbor,

Safety Recommendations

I have been working closely with the Chicago Police Department to make sure our community has the resources it needs to stay safe in light of a string of armed robberies. The police leadership has formed a Community Safety Team, which is bringing 10 additional officers and a sergeant to the area. Expect to see increased patrols, including on bicycles and in marked and unmarked vehicles. The 24th District has a comprehensive plan in place to stop these incidents and apprehend the offenders.

The police have issued safety recommendations that will help us all stay safe. The most important thing to remember is to practice situational awareness! Know your surroundings, be good neighbors, and pay attention to those around you—particularly strangers who may approach you while you are sitting in your car. Remember also to walk in groups whenever possible, while maintaining proper social distancing.

Use these incidents to remind yourself and your family of the importance of being safety conscious, and as always, if you see something suspicious, call 911. Your vigilance could save someone's life.

Election Update

We face an unprecedented election this year, as coronavirus concerns make us all rethink how and when to vote. The City of Chicago is committed to ensuring fair and safe access to voting for all of its citizens. Whether you choose to vote early, vote by mail, or vote in person on Election Day, please just remember to cast your ballot. Our democracy relies on it.

Early Voting begins at Warren Park (6601 N. Western) and across the city this Wednesday, October 14. The hours for Early Voting are as follows:

Monday-Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Election Day (November 3): 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Early Voting is already available at the Loop Super Site at 191 N. Clark Street. New this year, voters can vote at any Early Voting site on Election Day instead of solely at their designated polling place.

It is not too late to request a Vote By Mail ballot. Any Chicago voter may apply at www.chicagoelections.gov/en/vote-by-mail-application.html.

If you already applied to Vote By Mail, you can check the status of your application here. Please remember to return your completed ballot as soon as possible to ensure it arrives in time to be counted. Also make sure to follow all of the instructions on the ballot to avoid any potential disqualifications.

The Board of Elections will also be installing Secured Drop Boxes throughout the city to offer an additional option to return Vote By Mail ballots. The drop boxes will be at every Early Voting site—including Warren Park in the 50th Ward—from October 14 through November 3 during Early Voting hours.

There is a 24-hour drop box already available at 69 W. Washington Street until 7 p.m. on Election Day (November 3). Another drop box is available at the Loop Super Site at Clark and Lake during Early Voting hours.

For more information, including a complete list of locations and hours of availability, visit www.chicagoelections.gov/en/drop-boxes.html.

As always, voters have the right to vote in person on Election Day. All polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3. Many polling places have changed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The current list is available here (on Page 50). PLEASE NOTE: The list is subject to change due to the evolving COVID situation.

Please take a moment to confirm your voter registration status at www.chicagoelections.gov/en/your-voter-information.html. If you are not registered to vote, you can do so online at ova.elections.il.gov.

Changes to Non-Metered Water Bills

The Department of Finance is making a change to how non-metered utility customers receive their water bills. Effective December 1, 2020, billing will be switched to a monthly basis, instead of every six months. Your overall bill amount is not increasing due to this change, and monthly billing will, hopefully, make it easier to budget and pay for utilities.

If you are having difficulty paying your water bill, the city offers several options to help. You can apply for a payment plan by visiting www.chicago.gov/utilitybill and clicking on Utility Bill Payment Plan. The city also launched a new Utility Billing Relief program this year that could make water and sewer charges more affordable for low-income residents.

Interested residents can apply for the program at www.chicago.gov/UBR. It offers a reduced rate on water, sewer, and the water-sewer tax for homeowners who meet LIHEAP income eligibility criteria. It also puts a hold on late payment penalties and debt collection for outstanding bills, and offers debt forgiveness after successfully completing one year with no past due balance.

If you have any questions about any of this information, please contact Utility Billing & Customer Service at (312) 744-4426 or utilitybill@cityofchicago.org.

Happy Holidays!

The last days of Sukkot begin tonight. I would like to wish the 50th Ward's Jewish community a happy holiday—chag sameach!

Columbus Day

This Monday is Columbus Day, an annual commemoration of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. The 50th Ward Office will be closed on Monday, and reopen on Tuesday at 9 a.m. for any needed city services.

There will also be a change to garbage and recycling collection this upcoming week. All city-collected refuse and recycling will be serviced Tuesday through Friday. Residents should ensure all black and blue carts are accessible throughout the entire week, not just on their regular day of collection.

Columbus Day is traditionally viewed as a celebration of Italian-American heritage, and the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans will be holding its annual Columbus Day Parade as a car procession this year due to COVID-19 precautions. For more information, visit www.jccia.com/columbusday2020.

In recent years, this holiday has gained much opposition due to Christopher Columbus's treatment of the native inhabitants of the Americas. There is a strong movement to rename the holiday Indigenous Peoples' Day, in celebration of Native American culture. More information can be found here.

Have a wonderful weekend. Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
Alderman, 50th Ward

50th Ward Donation Drive

We are collecting donations of food, clothing, and household essentials at the 50th Ward Office. Many of our neighbors are still grappling with the economic ramifications of COVID-19, and any goods you can spare will make a tremendous difference to those in need.

Drop off donations at 2949 W. Devon during regular business hours. Call before coming to make sure a staff member is available to pick up the donation outside the office. Staff will wear masks and gloves and follow social distancing procedures.

Please consider donating non-perishable food, clothing, and any other goods you can spare—every item helps!

Election Judges Needed

The Chicago Board of Elections is working hard to ensure a safe and fair election this November, despite the pandemic. You can do your part by signing up to be an Election Judge and earn $170 for the day (more if you complete an online training course).

If you are interested in serving, you can apply online at chipollworker.com. Paper applications are also available in the 50th Ward Office. Call (773) 262-1050 or email info@50thwardchicago.com to request one.

Election judges manage precinct polling places on Election Day and make sure everyone is able to exercise their democratic rights. You can learn more about the opportunity at chicagoelections.gov/en/serving-as-a-judge-of-election.html.
