During his campaign for president, Donald Trump promised to promote universal school choice in all 50 states. The one proposal in Congress that aims to do just do that was just re-introduced and we need your help to make it a reality.
In the last session of Congress, Agudath Israel supported a national school choice proposal and worked with the bill sponsors and coalition partners to garner the support of more than 180 sponsors and co-sponsors. It then passed the important House Ways and Means Committee as a $5 billion per year program. Thankfully, it was just reintroduced this week by Senators Bill Cassidy and Tim Scott in the Senate and Representatives Adrian Smith and Burgess Owens in the House as a $10 billion annual program and is quickly building momentum.
The "Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA)" will encourage individual and corporate taxpayers to invest in education and cover expenses facing private school children. It does this by allowing a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit (NOT a deduction) for individuals and corporations who contribute to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO). These SGOs would then provide scholarships to children of eligible families for a range of educational expenses, including private school tuition!
All of this promises to be of great benefit to Jewish parents who are committed – but struggle — to giving their children a sound Torah education. Scholarship eligibility is for families earning 300% of the median income in that area (see chart), which means a very large percentage of the families in our community will be eligible.
Agudath Israel has been at the forefront of crafting and promoting ECCA, working with the sponsors and coalition partners over the last several years. Now Congress needs to hear from YOU.
We urge you to contact your members of Congress by email using the link HERE. Congress must hear your voice.
Thank you!
