Introduction

Aside from the mitzvah of tzedakah, there is a Torah commandment to lend money to Jew who needs a loan, even if he is wealthy. As with most mitzvos, this must be done even it involves a loss of potential profit to the lender.

Points to Ponder

  1. How much profit must one forgo in order to lend his money to another? What if he is in the moneylending business?
  2. If one lends his money with an Iska arrangement, where in he is making a profit off of the loan, is this a fulfillment of the mitzvah?
  3. Does the mitzvah of lending require lending out items other than money, like a car for example?
  4. Is a storeowner obligated to offer merchandise on credit to his Jewish customers?
