Ywn Aneinu TEHILLIM – Vishnitzer Rebbe of Monsey Hospitalized

Please be Mispallel for the Vishnitzer Rebbe of Monsey, who was taken to the hospital on Motzei Shabbos with a possible pneumonia. In November, YWN reported that the Rebbe was placed on a respirator and was listen in critical condition. His condition stabilized and he was released back home on a trach (Tracheostomy). A few days ago, the Rebbe contracted a fever and his condition worsened over Shabbos. A decision was made by his physicians to have him hospitalized. He was taken by Monsey Hatzolah to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. The Rebbe, Hagaon HaRav Mordechai Hager Shlita, is the elder of the admorim today. The Rebbe, who is around 95-years-old, is known for his devotion to learning Torah: He learns around 18 hours a day and asks his Chasidim to study at least two hours every day. He has thousands of Chassidim around the globe. Please be Mispallel for Mordechai ben Margulia. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

OU TORAH YU TORAH NAALEH.COM Assessing Aging By Shira Smiles

RABBI WEIN ON VAYIGASH 5778

The statement of our father Jacob to the Pharaoh of Egypt that “my years of life have been few and most unpleasant” is most perplexing. We all know the well-known anecdote that one of the most disappointing things in life is to ask someone how he or she is and they actually tell you. One would’ve expected that Jacob would have answered the Pharaoh in a general, positive fashion.

RABBI WEIN ON PASSINGS

One of the largest funerals in the history of the state of Israel took place last week, with thousands in attendance at the passing of the great scholar and leader Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shteinman. Though he was 104 years old at his passing, his absence was felt by so many simply because of his extraordinary piety, generous personality and visionary leadership.

OU TORAH Forgiveness: A Jewish Value By Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb

This has got to be one of the oldest “rabbi” jokes in the entire repertoire of American Jewish humor. It tells us of the young rabbi, fresh from rabbinical school, who addresses his first several sermons to his new congregation on the varied subjects of meticulous Sabbath observance, refraining from malicious gossip, honesty in business, and the avoidance of inappropriately familiar behavior with other men’s wives. After these first several homiletic salvos, the president of the congregation approaches him with the suggestion that these topics are much too sensitive and have upset many of the synagogue’s members. The president urges the rookie rabbi to try to find some more acceptable topics to speak about.

OU TORAH The First Psychotherapist By Britain's Former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

The phrase “Jewish thinker” may mean two very different things. It may mean a thinker who just happens to be Jewish by birth or descent – a Jewish physicist, for example – or it may refer to someone who has contributed specifically to Jewish thought: like Judah Halevi or Maimonides. The interesting question is: is there a third kind of Jewish thinker, one who contributes to the universe of knowledge, but does so in a recognisably Jewish way? The answer to this is never straightforward, yet we instinctively feel that there is such a thing. To give an analogy: there is often something recognisably Jewish about a certain kind of humour. Ruth Wisse has interesting things to say about it in her book, No Joke.[1] So does Peter Berger in his Redeeming Laughter.[2] Humour is universal, but it speaks in different accents in different cultures.

RAV KOOK ON VaYigash Part 2: The Reunion of Joseph and Judah

We all have limited amounts of time and energy and must learn how to apportion these resources wisely. In particular, we need to find a balance between activities that are directed inwardly, for our own personal development, and those directed outwardly, for the benefit of others. As Hillel taught, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I?” (Avot 1:14). Both areas are crucial. The difficulty lies in deciding how much of our time and resources should be dedicated to inner growth, and how much for reaching out to others. The nation as a whole also needs to juggle these two competing spheres. The search for the correct balance was played out in the dispute between Joseph and his brothers. Their struggle corresponded to two different paths within the Jewish people — one stressing the nation’s own spiritual development, and the other emphasizing Israel’s universal responsibility and influence.

RAV KOOK ON Vayigash Part 1: The First Exile

The very first exile of the Jewish people, the exile to Egypt, began as Jacob and his family left the Land of Israel. They intended to spend a short stay in Egypt until the famine passed. The Midrash (Yalkut Shimoni Hosea 528) makes a startling observation: “Jacob should have gone down to Egypt in chains. Yet God said, ‘Jacob, My first-born, how could I banish him in disgrace? Rather, I will send his son to go down before him.'” What did Jacob do to deserve being exiled in iron chains?

OU TORAH YU TORAH NAALEH.COM Final Flames By Shira Smiles

Adapted by Channie Koplowitz Stein We tend to think of our holidays as commemorating events in our history, but our Sages tell us that the Torah with all its precepts existed before the world was created, and all the holidays and mitzvoth were in place before the Jews were commanded at Sinai. Hashem then created historical events so that man could perhaps form a closer connection to the holidays and to the mitzvoth. As such, Chanukah and all that it represents predated the era of the Greeks and the battle the Chashmonaim fought against them. If that is the case, we must find allusions to Chanukah in the Torah.

RABBI WEIN ON MIKETZ 5778

The entire narrative of the story of Joseph and his brothers, as he sent off the Jewish people to Egyptian society, slavery and ultimate redemption, is meant to illustrate to us the guiding hand of Providence in human affairs. There is no question that all of the participants in this dramatic narrative acted according to their own wishes and wisdom. Yet the confluence of all of these conflicting personalities and ambitions leads to the desired end of the fulfillment of the prophecy and promise of God to Abraham about the future fate of the Jewish people.

RABBI WEIN ON JERUSALEM AND CHANUKA

The decision by Pres. Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel has been received in dismay and anger by portions of the Arab and Moslem world. This is pretty much what could have been expected since portions of that society have never given up on the idea of the destruction of the Jewish state.

OU TORAH Joseph, Chanukah, and Wisdom Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb

Wisdom is the rarest of all important human qualities. Observers of the contemporary state of affairs often remark that wisdom, which is especially necessary in this day and age, is now particularly lacking. Yet, at the same time, we are told that there is an age in life when most of us finally do obtain wisdom. Erik Erikson, the famous psychologist and thinker, believes that the course of the lifespan is marked by a series of developmental stages. At each stage of life, we master different developmental tasks. In late middle age, about age sixty, one begins to achieve wisdom. Erikson’s book, Childhood and Society, devotes an entire chapter to defining wisdom and to detailing the process by which one achieves it, or fails to achieve it.

OU TORAH Jews and Economics Britain's Former Chief By Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

We know that Jews have won a disproportionate number of Nobel Prizes: over twenty per cent of them from a group that represents 0.2 per cent of the world population, an over-representation of 100 to one. But the most striking disproportion is in the field of economics. The first Nobel Prize in economics was awarded in 1969. The most recent winner, in 2017, was Richard Thaler. In total there have been 79 laureates, of whom 29 were Jews; that is, over 36 per cent.

RAV KOOK ON Mikeitz Part 2: Waiting for the Dream

It took a long time, but Joseph’s dreams eventually came to pass. How long did it take? Joseph became viceroy of Egypt at age thirty, and nine years later (after seven years of plenty and two years of famine), his brothers came to buy food. So Joseph’s dreams that his brothers would one day bow down before him and recognize his greatness were fulfilled when he was 39 years old. Since he had dreamt those dreams of future greatness at age 17, we see that his dreams took 22 years to come true! “Rabbi Levy taught: One should wait as long as 22 years for a good dream to come true. This we learn from Joseph.” (Berachot 54a) What is special about the number 22? In what way is it connected to the fulfillment of dreams?

RAV KOOK ON Mikeitz Part 1: Joseph and the Evil Eye

Rabbi Yochanan, the third century scholar, had an unusual custom. He would sometimes sit down outside the town mikveh (ritual bath). This way, he explained, the Jewish women will see me as they leave the bath and will have children as beautiful as me. Rabbi Yochanan’s colleagues asked him: Are you not afraid of the Evil Eye?

RAV KOOK ON Chanukah Part 2: The Sacred Protects Itself

Rav Kook made the following comments when speaking at the inaugural ceremony for the Mizrachi Teachers Institute in Jerusalem during Chanukah, 1932: Why is it that the Menorah we use in our homes for Chanukah must be different than the Menorah in the Temple, bearing eight or nine branches instead of seven?

RAV KOOK ON Chanukah Part 1: Flickering Lights in Dark Times

Suitable Wicks and Oils The Mishnah (Shabbat, chapter two) discusses which wicks and oils are suitable for Sabbath lights. Certain materials may not be used for wicks since they make “the flame sputter” and fail to burn evenly; and certain oils may not be used because “they do not flow freely to the wick.” With regard to Chanukah, however, the Talmud (Shabbat 21b) rules that these restrictions do not apply. Even wicks and oil that do not burn smoothly may be used for Chanukah lights. Why are all oils permitted for use on Chanukah, even when lit on Friday evening? Why this distinction between Sabbath and Chanukah lights?

Aneinu Tefillos Needed & Chanuka and our own Kiddish Hashem

Dear Alumni and Friends,   I have a short message about Chanukah and Kiddush Hashem which I want to share with you, but first a request from Rebbetzen Price.  Rabbi Price is in an extremely critical condition.  There is a possibility the doctors say that the heart condition that threatens him could cure itself but no procedure now is possible.  She has asked that the alumni should try to get brachos for Shlomo Yoel ben Chaya Leah for any tzaddikim or Rebbis that they might know or know somebody who can reach them.  But I want to add that you fellows should not underestimate what you can do with your tefillos, with your kabbalas and with your learning in his merit.  May Hashem hear our cries and grant Rabbi Price shlita a refuah sheleimah.   There are many caves in the hills that surround Neveh.  This is where it all happened.  This is where 1,000 men, women and children inside a large cave were suffocated by fires that the Greeks made because we refused to profane the Shabbos.  Unfortunately, our own Jewish Hellenists informed the Greeks where they were hiding.  This was a Kiddush Hashem.   It was from other similar caves that Yehuda and his make-shift army of Rosh Yeshivas, yungerleit and loyal patriots attacked the trained and experienced mighty Greek army.  Their guerilla warfare was also a Kiddush Hashem.    It was Erev Chanukah, this past Tuesday when we in Eretz Yisrael witnessed our own Kiddush Hashem.   Some say there were as many as 600,000 from all over the Land, from every walk of life, who came to pay their respects to the Gadol HaDor, Rav Aharon Leib Steinman ztz"l.  Buses were provided from Telzstone but the return was not promised and uncertain, so I had my son drive our half working car.  We left at 10.30am and returned after 4pm, with hours and hours in traffic.  We parked in Ramat Gan, not even trying to get closer to Bnei Brak.  Route 4 was closed to private cars before we could reach it.  All this for the few minutes we were able to walk behind the 'mita'.  But nobody would hesitate such an ordeal for a chance to show Kavod HaTorah for a Gadol HaDor.  This was a Kiddush Hashem.    Perhaps you remember how we would daven Mincha in his home on Shabbos during the Bnei Brak Shabbaton.  As the fellows would walk around in a circle, he would give a bracha to each and every one.  I vividly remember that once he asked a Neveh guy his age and then made a comment that I alone understood.  I took the bochur aside and told him what the Rosh Yeshiva said and he begged me to ask him how he could do teshuva.  This insight, this ruach hakodesh is only a fraction of what Klal Yisrael has lost.  May he be a meiletz yosher for all our people and all the dangers that threaten us.  May he be a meiletz yosher to bring once again nissim and niflaos and herald the geula and the building of the Bayis Shlishi.    Have a lichtige Chanukah, Mash

OU TORAH YU TORAH NAALEH.COM Secrets of Success By Shira Smiles

Adapted by Channie Koplowitz Stein In Parshat Vayeshev we read the first half of Yosef Hatzadik’s history. We read of Yosef Hatzadik’s dreams and of his brothers selling him as a slave and of his eventual arrival in Egypt. As traumatic as his journey is, the Torah records that Yosef Hatzadik was matzliazch/successful in all he did wherever he was, whether in Potiphar’s house or in prison. What is the secret of his success? Can we adapt Yosef Hatzadik’s methods for our own self improvement? Our commentators cite two different ingredients to Yosef Hatzadik’s success, bein Adam laMakom/between man and God and bein adam lachavero/between man and his fellow man. The major clue that our commentators cite, especially Rashi, is that Yosef Hatzadik constantly speaks of Hashem, Shem Shomayim shogur bfiv.

RABBI WEIN ON VAYASHEV 5778

Our father Abraham had to deal mainly with his son Isaac in order to continue the tradition of monotheism and humanity that he had begun. His other children were sent away from his home so that in effect all of his efforts were concentrated on his son Isaac. Isaac himself had two sons, Jacob and Esau. He attempted to divide his attention and share his legacy with both of them.

RABBI WEIN ON THE UN AND ISRAEL

The state of Israel and the United Nations have a long and tortured history in dealing one with the other. Some seventy years ago the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution that became the basis in international terms for the creation of Israel. The United Nations thereby became the godfather of the Jewish state.

OU TORAH Man Plans, God Laughs By Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb

You thought your life would run smoothly, right? We all do. Then, something comes off, tragic or happy, which proves to us that life is not smooth at all, and probably is not supposed to be. Somehow, each of us has a personal script which envisions what our lives will be like in the near and even distant future. I remember a friend from college who had his life planned out. He knew who he was going to marry, what his career path would be, where he would live, and which friends would be loyal to him.

OU TORAH Improbable Endings and the Defeat of Despair Britain's Former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

We live life looking forward but we understand it only looking back. As we live from day to day, our life can seem like a meaningless sequence of random events, a series of accidents and happenstances that have no shape or inner logic. A traffic jam makes us late for an important meeting. A stray remark we make offends someone in a way we never intended. By a hair’s-breadth we fail to get the job we so sought. Life as we experience it can sometimes feel like Joseph Heller’s definition of history: “a trashbag of random coincidences blown open in a wind.”

RAV KOOK ON Vayeishev Part 2: Tamar's Sacrifice

Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the story of Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar took place after Judah was informed that the young widow had behaved loosely and was pregnant. Judah meted out a harsh punishment for her promiscuity: “Take her out and have her burned” (Gen. 38:24). Confronted with such a severe sentence, Tamar could have easily pointed an accusing finger at Judah. After all, it was Judah who had made her pregnant, not knowing the true identity of the “prostitute” he had met on the road to Timna. Incredibly, Tamar chose to be silent. Only as she was led out to be executed did Tamar remark enigmatically, “I am pregnant by the man who is the owner of these articles” (Gen. 38:25). When Judah heard that cryptic message, he immediately realized that her pregnancy was not the result of promiscuity, but a form of yibum (levirate marriage), which Tamar had only been able to consummate through deception. Why didn’t Tamar save her life by openly identifying her father-in-law — and judge — as the person responsible?

RAV KOOK ON Vayeishev Part 1: The Nature of Exile

"They took Joseph and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty, without water in it” (Gen. 37:24). When the brothers threw Joseph into the pit, the exile began — not just Joseph’s personal exile from his father’s house and the Land of Israel. From that dark, empty pit, began the exile of the entire Jewish people to Egypt. Joseph’s pit is a metaphor for Galut, for each exile of the Jewish people from their land.

BORUCH DAYAN HA’EMMES: THE GADOL HADOR, MARAN HAGAON HARAV SHTEINMAN ZATZAL December 12, 2017 1:00 am 0 Share on Facebook Tweet on Twitter Just moments ago, the terrible news arrived of the Petira of the Gadol Hador, the leader of Klal Yisroel, Maran HaGaon HaRav Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman ZATZAL, at the age of 104. As YWN had reported, Rav Shteinman was hospitalized three weeks ago for general weakness and testing. His condition remained stable until the early hours of Tuesday morning, when he suddenly turned critical. He went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated a few times. Unfortunately, he was taken from us at just before 8:00AM IL.In a shocking twist of events in the past three weeks, his oldest daughter suffered a fatal heart attack two weeks ago, and was suddenly Niftar. Rav Shteinman had never been informed of the bad news – but literally moments after her petira – his conditioned worsened and rapidly turned critical. His condition continued to deteriorate for 12 hours, but miraculously stabilized. A massive Levaya will be held in Bnei Brak on Tuesday – tentatively at 11:00 / 11:30 from his home on Rechov Chazon Ish. Rav Shteinman wrote more than one Tzava (will) in his life. One of them instructs his Levaya to be within 6 hours of his Petira – with minimal amount of Hespeidim, to reduce the amount of Kavod. Boruch Dayan Ha’Emmes… (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

JI The Maccabeats – Candles on the Sill – Hanukkah

Music video for “Candles on the Sill,” a parody of “Castle on the Hill” originally performed by Ed Sheeran.

JI JMR 8th Day Returns This Chanukah With A Brand New Smash Hit; “Miracle Of Light”!

Written and composed by the band’s lead singer Shmuel Marcus and produced and arranged by his brother Bentzi Marcus (guitarist and singer in the band.) A fresh and exciting track, its bringing the miracle of the oil that lasted eight nights into our everyday life. “I’ll be a miracle of light”, and “show me a candle I’ll show you the light” are some lyrical examples of this unique Jewish pop/rock take on the miracle of light we celebrate every year on Chanukah. The song was produced and engineered at MT Studios in Burbank, CA by legendary producer and bass player Matt Thorne and features the always amazing Michael Lee on synth and keys. “I love working with these guys”, said Matt, “they always bring so much positive energy to the studio and the music is great!” Added Michael Lee, “Shmuel has an incredible way of writing these hooks that you just have to love. His songs are infectiously uplifting. I don’t understand all the words but the soul aspect of their music still shines through”. The music video was produced and directed by 8th Day‘s Bentzi Marcus and filmed and edited by Levi Percia. Shmuel says “it’s great being on set with Bentzi as he’s performing in and directing the video at the same time! He’s got the vision..” The video shoot took place on the campus of the Hebrew Academy of Huntington Beach, CA. Aside from all the pyrotechnics and incredible dance and acrobatics, the video also features a kids choir of students from the Hebrew Academy. “This was kind of a full circle moment for us”, said Bentzi. “I got my music career started singing in the Hebrew Academy school choir, and Chanukah time was always our main performance. So when the school thankfully agreed to participate in this it was definitely a neat convergence of past, present and future.” So folks, as we start getting into the Chanukah spirit let’s get ready to be a “Miracle Of Light“!

They find pleasure in imagining a world which is so different than the one which we inhabit; a world where good continually prevails, the powers of evil are always eventually subdued, and behind every stone may lurk the genie which could grant a person's any wish.

CHABAD.ORG “My Name is . . . and I am a Human Being” The Jewish idea of perfection By Shais Taub

A one-liner from comedian Steven Wright: “They told me in school that ‘practice makes perfect.’ Then they told me, ‘Nobody’s perfect.’ So I stopped practicing.” A droll observation. But it raises a serious issue. Between these two truisms, which one is really true? Or is the truth somewhere in between. Is perfection attainable or is it not?

Aneinu Three Days of Tefillah

Dear Friends: Today President Trump announced that the U.S. will be the first nation to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel.  We are grateful to the President for his leadership and ask that everyone call the White House (1-202-456-1111) to express our support for this courageous act. However, as we celebrate this day, threats have been made to ignite riots and violence in Israel and beyond.  In light of this, we that everyone also pray for peace in Israel and all communities around the world, reciting Tehillim, especially chapters 83 & 126.   In addition, and in direct response to the “Three Days of Rage” being initiated by our enemies, let us create "Three Days of Tefillah" where we increase our kavanah, especially as we recite the blessings of ולירושלים עירך & רצה in our daily amidah.   May we merit the fulfillment of the prophetic vision of the prophet Zechariya: כֹּה אָמַר ה' שַׁבְתִּי אֶל צִיּוֹן וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתוֹךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָם .וְנִקְרְאָה יְרוּשָׁלַם עִיר הָאֱמֶת וְהַר ה' צְבָאוֹת הַר הַקֹּדֶשׁ Thus said the L-rd: I have returned to Zion, and I will dwell in Jerusalem. Jerusalem will be called the City of Faithfulness, and the mount of the L-rd of Hosts the Holy Mount. Thus said the L-rd of Hosts: There shall yet be old men and women in the squares of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of their great age. And the squares of the city shall be crowded with boys and girls playing in the squares.
