VBM To Cultivate and to Guard: The Universal Duties of Mankind By Harav Aharon Lichtenstein

When seeking to shape our personalities according to Torah values, we must relate to at least three levels of expectation and responsibility. These can be regarded as concentric circles, moving from the broader to the more specific: 1) the universal demands placed upon one simply as a human being; 2) the demands of a Jew; 3) the responsibilities of a ben-Torah, one who makes Torah study a central part of his life and embodies its values.

VBM Kayin's Act By Harav Yaakov Medan

I. The Sacrifice and the Sin The first two acts of humanity recounted in the Torah are humankind's first two failures. Adam lived 930 years, and we know nothing about what he did all those years apart from his failure when he ate from the Tree of Knowledge and attempted to hide from his Creator in the aftermath of that sin. Kayin, too, must have done many things over the course of his life, but the Torah focuses exclusively on the shedding of his brother's blood and his failed attempt to hide this from God. With these failures, the Torah intends to teach us the great challenge of living righteously before God, both in man's relationship with his Creator and in his relationship with his fellow man.

VBM The Song of the Torah By Rav Yoel Bin-Nun

The Relationship Between Faith and Science The opening chapter of the Torah and of the entire Bible contains the foundation of the entire religion of Israel: One God created everything! The term that is commonly used to express this idea, "monotheistic religion," is an inaccurate translation. The Torah does not say: "In the beginning, the one God [El], or the God Most High, created the world," in the manner that Malkitzedek, king of Shalem, expressed to Avraham: "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth" (Bereishit 14:19). The Torah does not refer, as many people even today say, to "a Higher Power." Rather, the Torah speaks of "Elohim echad" – that is to say, all of the powers in the world are one! Heaven and earth, dry land and seas, the sun, the moon, and the stars, plants, animals and man, male and female. In scientific terms – there is one set of laws.

RABB WEIN ON BERESHITH 5780

The Garden of Eden is portrayed for us as being the perfect place. Mortality had not yet entered the way of the world and our aged father and mother lived in an environment where everything was provided; food, shelter and freedom from external dangers. Yet, in this most idyllic of situations – one that we cannot begin to contemplate or imagine – temptation lurked even in this setting.

RABBI WEIN ON IT LOOKS GOOD

We are all aware that looks can be quite deceiving. When the Torah describes for us the concept of knowledge in the Garden of Eden, it refers to it as being most desirous and pleasant in the eyes of our mother Eve. As we all know, this became the source of human mortality and the bitter sin that led to expulsion from Paradise.

OU TORAH The Genesis of Love By Britain's Former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

Click here for Family Edition. In The Lonely Man of Faith, Rabbi Soloveitchik drew our attention to the fact that Bereishit contains two separate accounts of creation. The first is in Genesis 1, the second in Genesis 2-3, and they are significantly different.

RAV KOOK ON Bereishit Part 3: Be Fruitful and Multiply

Immediately after creating man and woman, God commanded them, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the land and conquer it” (Gen. 1:28). One might think that the very first mitzvah in the Torah should be some central precept — not worshipping idols, for example, or belief in one God. What is so important about procreation, that this was God’s first command to humanity? And why was it necessary for God to command that which comes naturally to humans?

RAV KOOK ON Breishi Part 2: The Hidden Light of Creation

Ohr Ha-Ganuz The very first act of Creation, as recorded in the Book of Genesis, was the creation of light. “And God said: There shall be light” (Gen. 1:3). What kind of light was this?

RAV KOOK ON Bereishiit/Noah: Part1 The Age of the Universe

Contradictions between science and Torah appear particularly irreconcilable with respect to the Torah’s description of the creation of the world and the beginnings of mankind. Are these accounts meant to be taken literally? Should we believe that the universe came into existence some 5,760 years ago? Must we reject the theory of evolution out of hand?

R' Meir Shapiro's Dream Realized
Heroes of the Daf: A Dream Realized

Become a fellow Yid's Chavrusa in an instant

The lawyer from Washington, D.C. and the TSA agent from Columbus, Ohio. These two yidden did not know each other, yet in an instant became chavrusos.

It occurred when attorney Judah Lifschitz was in the Columbus Airport to catch a flight home after a day in court. During security screening, a TSA agent wearing a kippah serugah approached Judah to ask whether he had learned The Daf that day. After the attorney responded affirmatively, the agent asked him to explain The Daf as he had difficulty understanding it. It was a difficult sugya in Maseches Shabbos and the two spent twenty minutes discussing it – as the other TSA agents watched in amazement.

This was precisely the scenario that HaRav Meir Shapiro zt"l envisioned when he introduced the concept of The Daf at The Agudah's Knessiah Gedolah in pre-war Vienna, years before commercial airline flights were scheduled: Two yidden, anywhere, instantly connected by a common Daf in Torah.

When over 100,000 yidden worldwide will iy"H join to celebrate the upcoming Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi, they will all be connected through the Torah and the learning of The Daf. This will no doubt be the greatest demonstration of achdus and Ki Heim Chayeinu in contemporary history. Be a part of it!
