Police warn of attempted child abduction of Far North Side

Police are warning residents of the Far North Side of an attempted child abduction that occurred in the West Rogers Park neighborhood last week.

About 3:45 p.m. Friday, a man got out of a purple van on the 7300 block of North Sacramento Avenue and told a young boy that he would drive him home, according to a Chicago Police community alert. The child apparently was not harmed.

The man was described as between 35 and 39 years old, possibly Hispanic, with short with balding hair, wearing a black shirt and white pants, according to police.

The van may have had a license plate with "K" as the first letter, as well as some type of sticker on the back. The van is said to have rusty hub caps.

Police are advising residents not to allow children to travel alone on the streets, or stand alone at bus stops or in other public areas. They are also reminding parents to caution children to be alert for strangers or suspicious vehicles, and to report any suspicious activity to an adult or police.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Belmont Area Special Victims Unit detectives at (312) 744-8200.
