JI [The Jewish Star] Kosher Bookworm: Reb Shlomo’s Torah legacy

In his foreword to this work, Rabbi Shmuel Intrator notes the influences of the following rabbinic figures behind Rabbi Carlebach’s work. “His teachings hold a depth that weave eternally through a tapestry of multi-layered interpretations and applications. This perspective to Torah study he inherited from his great master, Rav Aharon Kotler, the founder of the Lakewood Yeshiva, whose brilliant lectures are world renowned for their highly developed detailed Talmudic pilpul study. “Reb Shlomo’s breadth of Torah and life scope, evident in many of his teachings, are an approach to Torah study that he learned from Rav Shlomo Heiman, the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Vadaath who preferred a broader, more inclusive approach to a more detailed, developed one. “Reb Shlomo’s application of sophisticated Talmudic and Halachic approaches to spiritual Chassidic and Kabbalistic concepts are clearly influences of his close apprenticeship with the last Lubavitcher Rebbe.” These influences coupled with the teachings of Ishbitz and Breslov, all came together and are reflected in the Torah teachings that are to be found in this newly issued work of Reb Shlomo’s Torah teachings. As an example of these teachings consider the following sampling from this week’s Parshat Noach. “Reb Nachman and all the Rebbes say that G-d never said, ‘Let there be water,’ so where did the water come from? The truth is that the water is the one thing, which is between before and after creation…” Water is very pure; water is absolutely very pure which means in a certain deep way, water is untouched by creation. It’s created and yet it’s not created. So the thing is that obviously, the way the world was evolving ‘after creation’ was absolutely polluted, so G-d began pulling back. He didn’t destroy all creation but He went back half a step.” In another teaching this in regard to prayer we learn the following, “You know why Noach didn’t pray for the world? Noach believed in G-d. He understood that G-d created the world, and now G-d wants to destroy it. So people are bad and there is nothing to do about it, they have to be wiped out. If someone is evil, then you got to destroy them. “You know friends, if someone says to me, ‘I bought ice-cream for twenty-five cents and I don’t like it, I want to throw it out,’ I‘m not crying over it. “If someone says to me, ‘ I bought something for a hundred million dollars and I want to throw it away,’ I say, ‘please don’t do this.’ “See what it is… Noach didn’t know what the world is, he did not know how precious the world is. Yes, he knew that it was a beautiful world. He knew there is one G-d, but, mamesh knowing what the world is all about, how deep the world is, how deep every human being is? This he didn’t know.” I conclude this essay with the following observation by Rabbi Intrator. “The teachings in this book are not just meant to be read, but they are intended to be enjoyed and experienced as ‘holy music’. Ultimately they are intended as a lesson to live a ‘holy life.’” Indeed, for those of us who enjoyed Reb Shlomo in life, these pages of learning will bring us back to the memories of the cadence of his voice in both prose and song. To those of you who never experienced him on the pulpit or stage kindly please obtain this work in the month to come and learn the first half of Sefer Bereishis as you never learned it before. Torah Methodology #1 KAL V'CHOMER

(FOR A YEHOSHUA FOR SOUTHERN ISRAEL(E"Y)) The last part of the preliminary morning service each day is the “Braisa of Rabbi Yishmael.” (A braisa is a teaching contemporary with the Mishna but not included in the final text of that work.) Rabbi Yishmael’s braisa enumerates the thirteen methodologies used for studying the Torah. Once a week for thirteen weeks, we will examine these principles. Torah Methodology #1 – Kal v’Chomer The most basic hermeneutical methodology is the kal v’chomer, known in Latin as an argument a fortiori, meaning “from the stronger case.” The nature of an argument a fortiori is “Arnold is known to be stronger than Barack. If Barack can lift 100 lbs., a fortiori Arnold can lift 100 lbs.” There is a limit to the argument a fortiori, however: you can’t get more out of it than you put into it. So, I may know that Arnold is stronger than Barack, but I don’t know if that means Arnold can lift 200 lbs., 150 lbs., 101 lbs. or 100 lbs. and 1 oz. All I know for sure is that Arnold can certainly lift whatever Barack can lift. Now, let’s see how a kal v’chomer works in Biblical exegesis. The Torah tells us that Yom Tov is just like Shabbos except that food preparation is permitted. In other words, the laws of Shabbos are known to be more stringent than those of Yom Tov. If something is known to be permitted on Shabbos, kal v’chomer it must be permitted on Yom Tov. Conversely, if something is known to be prohibited on Yom Tov, kal v’chomer it must be prohibited on Shabbos. The Torah itself gives us a perfect example of a kal v’chomer. In Numbers 22:14, after reprimanding Miriam, God sent her out of the camp for a week. Moshe asked for clemency for his sister but God replied, “If her father had spit in her face, wouldn’t she hide her face in shame for seven days?” If she would hide for a week after being chastised by her father, kal v’chomer she should leave the camp for a week after being chastised by God. (Logically, she should have had to go out for two weeks or more but remember, you can’t get more out of a kal v’chomer than you put into it!) Since a kal v’chomer is a strictly logical process, anyone can argue a case a fortiori. By Rabbi Jack Abramowitz

PARSHA PERSPECTIVES PARSHAS NOACH BY THE BAIS HAVAAD

Burying the Hatchet In this week’s Parsha, Rashi (11:28) makes reference to the well-known Midrash that states that when Avraham Avinu was young, he took a hatchet and smashed his father’s idols. For that act of defiance, King Nimrod sentenced Avraham to be thrown into a flaming furnace. What are we to learn from Avraham Avinu’s zealotry? Are we to model our behavior after our patriarch, smashing and destroying all that threatens morality and holiness? Are we allowed to destroy an immodest billboard, or the headquarters of a missionary group? Furthermore, if such actions are permissible, does the Torah go further and in any way obligate us to do so? It seems that we can divide the question into several parts. Firstly, are we allowed to protect ourselves from being damaged by someone else’s object by destroying or damaging it first? If we are, in fact, allowed to do so, may we protect ourselves from potential spiritual damage in a similar way? Furthermore, presuming that acting in the above manner is permitted, does this extend to potential damage to others, as well, when we ourselves aren’t exposed to the said risk?

BRESLEV.CO.IL BONUS RABBI WINSTON'S WINDOW NO FEAR NO FAIR

Parshat Noah FRIDAY NIGHT: The world was corrupt before G-d, and the land was filled with violence. (Bereishis 6:11) Imagine the following scenario. It will seem outlandish at first, but if you think about, it actually happens every time a professional basketball player runs on to the court to play a game. Imagine that your favorite basketball player has just been called for a foul. But, rather than simply award a free shot to the other team, the lights dim, except for a spotlight on the errant ball player. The crowd hushes, and a booming voice yells out, "YOU FOULED!" The rest of the conversation goes like this: Player: "I what?!" Voice: "YOU FOULED ANOTHER PLAYER!" "Yah, so I did! Big deal! They got their free shot and three points!? Let's get back to the game already!" "Not so fast! That is not good enough!"

CHASSIDIC PEARLS ON THE PARSHA BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS NOACH

The whole earth was of one language and of common purpose (Bereishit 11:1). The above passage is an apparent praise of the generation that built the Tower of Babel, in that the people were united. But, when we take a closer look at them, we see that under Nimrod's leadership, they were united in a double purpose of evil. First, as their leader's name indicates (Nimrod in Hebrew means "we shall revolt"), the people of Babel united in erecting the Tower of Babel as a declaration of revolution against Hashem. Second, they were united in their opposition to the tzaddik of the generation, our forefather Avraham (Abraham), the world's lone monotheist. Nimrod threw Avraham into the same fiery furnace that was used to produce bricks for the Tower of Babel. As such, the construction of the Tower of Babel and the attempt to kill Avraham were simultaneous acts of the same evil generation revolting against Hashem.

THE TORAH COMMENTARY OF RABBI SHLOMO CARLEBACH: Genesis, Part I edited by Rabbi Shlomo Katz

The Torah Commentary of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach provides a glimpse into the unusual way in which the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach received and transmitted Torah. It also aids the reader in bridging “Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach the great composer/singer” and “Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach the great scholar/teacher.” Those who sing his songs, but do not learn his Torah, only sing half a song. When Reb Shlomo speaks of Abraham and Sara, you are sure he is speaking about his own grandparents. When delving into the lives of Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel and Leah, it is as if he is speaking of his own parents. The teachings in this book of commentary are not just meant to be read – they are intended to be enjoyed and experienced as “holy music.” Ultimately, they are intended as a lesson in living a “holy life.” Wherever Reb Shlomo traveled in the world, he brought several suitcases of holy books with him. This book makes Reb Shlomo’s teachings accessible to help us carry on our journey through life.DISCOUNT HERE SHOULD MIRTZ HASHEM IT WILL BE AT KESHER STAM TOMORROW

YWN PLEASE DAVEN 4 Yerushalmi Bachur Imprisioned In India

While the tzibur is just beginning to recover from the bochrim in Japan incident, which all continue davening will end soon and end well, there is now a story of a Yerushalmi bachur involved with drugs and imprisoned in India. The bachur is from a respected Yerushalayim family, deciding before his chasnah that he had to fly to India. While he was there, he was in the home of the Shaliach Rav Gavriel Holtzberg HY”D, actually becoming a ‘ben bayis’ in the Chabad house. One night, while there, police came into an apartment he was visiting. They searched the room and found he was in possession of drugs. A number of friends who were with him in the apartment managed to flee from police while some were arrested, including the bachur. Advertise On YWN » The young man, the bachur, insists he does not speak the local language and was unable to communicate with police. He denies any involvement in drugs, insisting he is innocent. He feels that his inability to communicate worked against him, and he was arrested and his trail simply vanished. Rav Gavriel reportedly tried to find him, but he was unsuccessful. The young man simply vanished. A few short weeks before the Mumbai massacre a friend of the bachur told Rav Gavriel that the bachur was incarcerated. Rav Nachman Holtzberg, Gavriel’s father, was visiting at the time, and he heard of the young man’s plight and incarceration under harsh conditions. The shaliach updated the family of the young man in Yerushalayim, who apparently was clueless as to his whereabouts and disposition. The young man’s father, a noted talmid chacham, was niftar a number of days after hearing the news. He had a massive heart attack R”L. The family of the kallah and the bachur’s family teamed together to see what could be done. They learned the young man was being held in one of the harshest prsins in India, far from civilization. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, apparently because he lacked any legal representation. For Rav Nachman Holtzberg, the story of the young man was forgotten due to the family’s tragedy resulting from the terror attack against the Chabad house in Mumbai. A number of weeks ago however, while learning in a Crown Heights beis medrash, he noticed a yid learning daf yomi by phone. When he hung up the phone, the young man told R’ Nachman that he learns daf yomi with a young chosson imprisoned in India. Once in a while he manages to connect with him and they learn, seeking to assist the pour soul. R’ Nachman immediately remembered the situation a few weeks before the attack, the young man, and decided to take upon himself to do what he could to assist the young man. Since that time, R’ Holtzberg enlisted the assistance of a number of askanim in the USA – including the Dror Organization, who are now probing what legal assistance can be offered to the young man. Three attorneys have been hired and an appeal has been filed in India.

The family of the Shabbos terror attack victim in Yerushalayim calls on the tzibur to daven for their son, Yehuda [ben Ronit] who remains in moderate/stable condition in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. Baruch Hashem his condition has improved since he arrived in the trauma unit. Yehuda was stabbed multiple times by an Arab male in the Ramot neighborhood of Yerushalayim on Shabbos afternoon. The assailant is believed to have fled to nearby Beit Iksa. Ronit Ne’emad, the victim’s mother, explains that her son underwent surgery which included extensive work to repair his liver, which was seriously damaged in the stabbing attack. “We believe the tefilos of Am Yisrael will help to cure him and call on everyone to please daven for my son”. Security forces, including soldiers and border police, entered Beit Iksa on motzei Shabbos, designated as an “Area B” under the Oslo Agreement, under PA (Palestinian Authority) civil control but Israeli security control. According to PA sources, three residents were injured by soldiers and a number of arrests were made. The village was shut down by security forces on motzei Shabbos, not permitting anyone to enter of leave. There has been no official statement by Israeli sources as to the operation in Beit Iksa. Rubashkin Petition Launches "Fortune 500 " Campaign with goal of being first place on White House site.

The Rubashkin Petition now in it's third week has launched a massive new campaign entitled "Fortune 500" with the goal stated to become number one in petitions gathered in a 30 day span. The plan is to get 500 people who really care to commit themselves to getting 25 signatures each.

"The petition has gathered close to 35,000 signatures in about two weeks time and would need to gather another 25,000 in the next 2 weeks.

Danny Finkelman, who is heading this new campaign, said, "The rate of signatures that we are getting is truly amazing especially during this hectic holiday season."
Yet Finkelman is not satisfied and so he furthered this grassroots effort and began "Fortune 500".

With Sukkos quickly approaching and the deadline for the petition being October 22 that leaves just two short weeks to go. This makes the "Fortune 500" campaign all that much more crucial. "Can you imagine when at 30 days since the launch we have put R' Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin as the number one issue of the White House Petition site?" Finkelman asked.

To become a member of this group simply email : SMRpetition@aol.com
State your willingness to become a member and then gather the signatures.

Since every person over 13 years with a valid email address could vote, by engaging 10 heads of a household you can quickly have 30 votes or more.

The campaign has already gotten over a 100 volunteers who are actively involved appealing to the general public. They have taken this issue very personally and are quickly taking this issue to the top.

"I've never seen such a broad involvement of so many people in such a short period of time." said Yossi Gestetner, a leading PR expert."To have over 30,000 people sign up in the two weeks from Rosh Hashana to Yom Kippur is an accomplishment that is worth too congratulate. But to make the Rubashkin Petition the number one petition in the country; that would be truly amazing!"

This will only happen with your help.

    Volunteer now!
