At the end of this week's parsha the Torah tells us how Yosef ruled Egypt. Following the famine that decimated Egypt, Yosef set up a taxation system whereby all citizens were obligated to pay one-fifth of their agricultural income to the government. However, Yosef exempted all priests from this taxation. One will note that the Torah uses a double expression when mentioning that the priests were exempt. The Torah writes "only the priests' land alone did not become Pharaoh's." Feature Shiur Parshas Vayigash. Even then, the moment most of these barbers would walk in and put their hands on the Lubliner's head they were so embarrassed.

CHASSIDIC PEARLS ON THE PARSHA BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS VAYIGASH

"And the men are shepherds, for they've always been herdsmen" (Bereishit 46:32). Yosef (Joseph), when describing his brothers to Pharaoh, tells him that they are "shepherds, for they've always been herdsmen." This passage seems redundant indeed, for if we know that the sons of Yaakov (Jacob) are shepherds, why must we also learn that they're herdsman as well; isn't one term synonymous to the other? Also, why did so many of our most important ancestors and national leaders – Avraham (Abraham), Yitzchak (Isaac), Yaakov (Jacob), Yaakov's sons, Moshe (Moses), Shmuel HaNavi (Samuel the Prophet), and Dovid HaMelech (King David) – choose to be shepherds? Our holy forefathers found four distinct advantages of being shepherds: First, tending sheep is a relatively easy vocation that doesn't occupy a person's thought process; therefore, one can tend flocks and simultaneously think about other loftier endeavors. Second, sheep are profitable in that they yield wool, milk, and offspring; if the sheep graze on open land, then the flock owner has virtually no overhead. Third, one who tends flocks spends most of his time far away from other people, and therefore avoids committing a large list of transgressions including slander, gossip, swindling, and forbidden sights, just to name a few. Fourth, this vocation helped our forefathers to maintain their holiness by guarding them from assimilating with their Egyptian hosts, since shepherding was an anathema to the ancient Egyptians.

'Joseph died, and [then] his brothers and all that generation' (Ex. 1:6). Why was Joseph's life shorter than that of his brothers? The Sages explained the reason for Joseph's early demise was due to his public office. When one assumes a position of authority, 'his days and years are shortened' (Berachot 55a). Yet this hardly seems fair. Why should those who dedicate their lives to public affairs be punished with fewer years?

As the possuk makes clear, Mano'ach did not realize this was an angel. The angel responds that he will not eat. If Mano'ach would like, the angel suggests, a burnt offering for Hashem would be fitting. At that point Manoach asked, “What is your name?” The angel responded, 'Why is it that you ask for my name?”

He is being charged with being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, and there are additional charges expected. At the same time, we must recognize that white supremacy and other forms of extremism remain a threat. It is always important to remain vigilant. We encourage you to continue to do the following: · Keep your eyes and ears open for anything unusual or suspicious and call law enforcement immediately if you come across something. Unusual behavior should be promptly reported to the police or security personnel. · Consider not letting anybody you don’t know into your facility, and not allowing any new visitor to your facility roam around unescorted. · Ensure that your staff members, including newly hired personnel, know what to do in the event of an emergency, and that they know your policy on when to allow persons to enter the facility. · Make sure to use the security devices you have in place and that access controls are being used properly. For example, ensure that communications equipment (for instance, walkie-talkies) and video cameras are working and properly used. · Review and practice security procedures. After Yiftach inquires from the King of Ammon about the cause for the war., he receives a response. “The Jews took my land when they came out of Mitzrayim”, said the King of Ammon.”(verse 15) Subsequently, for the next seven verses Yiftach explains to the King the history of the exodus from Mitzrayim and the journeys and wars of B'nei yisrael on the way to the Land of Israel. He explains that B'nei Yisrael never took the lands of Ammon. Rather, B'nei Israel defeated Sichon who had captured the land of Ammon.

Since Chanukah is a time for shevach and hodayah, praise and thanks for Hashem, perhaps it is fitting to mention a medresh from Bamidbar Rabbah (20, 5) that dwells on the times in our history that we did not appreciate what Hashem had done for us. “Hashem said, 'I redeem you and perform miracles for you and you rebel against me. Come and see seven times I have redeemed you. Correspondingly, you were obligated to praise me seven times. As it says in Shoftim (10,11-12), “Did I not save you from Egypt and from the Amorite and from the children of Ammon and from the Philistines? The Sidonians and Amalek and Maon oppressed you and you cried out to me and I saved you from their hand . . . and you rebelled against me by serving seven idols.”'”

There are two interesting facts about “yayin” that Tosfos teaches us. We all know that the brocha that we make on yayin is “borei pri hagafen.” However, there is no simple way to ascertain that yayin is in fact called a pri. As a matter of fact, Tosfos points out that the possuk regarding bikkurim tells us to take “Meireishis kol pri ha'adamah.” The Mishnah in Bikkurim explains, “You should bring a fruit as bikkurim, however, you may not bring a drink as bikkurim.” From here it would seem that wine is not called a “pri”. How then could we make a “borei pri hagafen” on wine?

A short Insight into Judges, Chapter 8 By Rabbi Nisson Dov Miller

In Parshas Shemos (3,22) we read of the command to the women of B'nei Yisroel “v'sha'alah isha mishchenta …. klei chesef u'chlei zahav u'smalos” - “Each women shall “sha'alah” from her neighbor ...silver vessels, golden vessels and garments.” The Radak understands this as a request to borrow these items from the Egyptians. As we find a borrower being called a sho'eil throughout Tanach. In truth, this seems to fit in line with the gemora in Sanhedrin (91a) that describes an Egyptian who made a claim in the court of Alexander of Macedonia for all of the riches that the Jews had taken with them when they left Egypt. G'viha ben P'sisa, defending the Jews, responded that the Egyptians should pay the Jews for the labor of (up to) 600,000 Jews who toiled in Egypt for all of those years without getting paid. It would seem that the gemora understands that the Jews would have owed the Egyptians the return of their items were it not for the fact that the Jews were owed their “slave wages”.

A short Insight into Judges, Chapter 7 By Rabbi Nisson Dov Miller

Rabbeinu Bachya explains that when Yaakov Avinu started his journey to see his long lost son Yosef, Hashem appeared to him in a dream and said (Bereishis, 46,4), “Have no fear of descending to Egypt … Anochi eireid imcha Mitzraiymah v'anochi a'alcha gam aloh” - “I shall descend with you to Egypt and I shall surely bring you up.” This is a hint here that the Shechinah will descend with them. Although the translation from Onkelus usually tries to veer away from attributing “physical” type behavior with Hashem, here Onkelus confirms the hint as he translates “eireid”as “eichus” - “I will go down”( differently than he translates it in Shemos “Vayeired Hashem be'anan” - “And Hashem descended in a cloud” ; Onkelous – “v'isgali Hashem” - “And Hashem revealed Himself”).

In his sefer Chochma U’mussar (1,197), The Alter of Kelm writes about the importance of sharing the burdens that our fellow Jews are shouldering. He writes, “We have found in Shoftim (6,11), “And his son Gideon was threshing wheat at the winepress to hide it from Midian.” Rashi explains, “His father was beating them. Gideon said, ‘Father, your are older. If Midyan comes you will not be able to flee. You should go and I will beat.’”

In Eastern Europe card playing on Chanuka was a traditional pastime for adults while the younger generation of Jews amused themselves with spinning the dreidel. Most of the researchers of Jewish customs associate this gambling custom with the fact that when the Greeks searched Jewish homes and caves for those studying the Torah, the Jews played with dice or cards to distract them and allow those being Moser Nefesh, to hide or escape. Chanuka and this type of entertainment gambling became an accepted part of the Chanuka celebrations in the general Jewish community over a millennia ago. Gambling, in all of its forms, was frowned upon if not actually forbidden by the rabbinic authorities of the ages. This article will discuss various forms of “accepted” gaming and analyze some possible explanations and leniencies. Choshen Mishpat Chiddush: Nittel Nacht- the custom not to learn Torah on the night of December24th Many Eastern European Jewish communities had a custom not to learn Torah on the night of 24-25 December every year. Some Chassidim still adhere to this custom today.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslev teaches us that the days of Chanukka are days of thanksgiving (see Likutei Moharan II: 2). In effect, every day of our lives could be termed a day of thanksgiving, provided that we do what we’re supposed to. When a Jew wakes up in the morning, he or she should sing out, Modeh ani lefonecha… We thank Hashem, for giving us back our souls and enabling us to live another day. Those of us that have had to look death in the face at one point or another in their lives don’t take this wonderful first utterance of the day for granted.

Psalms Chapter 6 1. To the chief Musician for stringed instruments, according to the Sheminith, a psalm of David. 2. O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger, nor chasten me in your hot displeasure. 3. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak; O Lord, heal me; for my bones shudder. 4. My soul is also much troubled. And you, O Lord, how long? 5. Return, O Lord, deliver my soul. Oh save me for the sake of your loving kindness! 6. For in death there is no remembrance of you. In Sheol who shall give you thanks? 7. I am weary with my moaning; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears. 8. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my enemies. 9. Depart from me, all you evil doers; for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. 10. The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer. 11. Let all my enemies be ashamed and much troubled; let them return and be ashamed in a moment.
