The month of Tevet contains three fast days on three consecutive days beginning on the 8th of Tevet. While we only observe one actual fast day, it is valuable to understand and incorporate the messages of each of these days. The 8th day of Tevet commemorates the first translation of the Torah into Greek, the 9th day marks the passing of Ezra and Nechemia and on the 10th of Tevet, the siege was laid on Yerushalayim. Each of the days represents a challenge we may face - spiritual challenges, personal and national loss and physical threat. The message of Chodesh Tevet is that light will ultimately triumph. The winter solstice generally falls out during this month, symbolizing rebirth and restoration. Gathering to learn together on Rosh Chodesh is a way of capturing this light together. Our virtual Rosh Chodesh Tevet shiur with Rebbetzin Rifki Freundlich will take place Sunday, December 5 at 12 noon EST. Register at www.ou.org/women/rc. Rifki Freundlich is the Rebbetzin of Congregation TBDJ in Montreal where she has lived with her husband, Rabbi Yechezkel, and their children since 2016.
