Introduction

The prohibition of ribbis contains many subcategories, with varying levels of severity. The most severe is ribbis ketzutzah which refers to ribbis arrangements that are forbidden on the Torah level. The term avak ribbis refers broadly to ribbis arrangements that are forbidden miderabanan but there are several different branches of avak ribbis and not all of them have the same level of severity.

Points to Ponder

• What are the necessary components that make a loan agreement into ribbis ketzutzah? • If ribbis was already collected, in which cases must it be returned? Can a bais din compel a lender to return it or must he do so on his own? • May a borrower provide any benefit to his lender, such as buying him a gift or granting him a public honor? • Is there a problem with giving a benefit to the lender before the loan was initiated or after the loan has been repaid?
