Selling The Firstborn's Extra Share?
In this week's parsha we read about the episode in which Eisav sold his firstborn rights to Yaakov. As the Commentaries explain, Eisav sold his extra portion of inheritance that every firstborn is entitled to. However, some authorities question how such a transaction could have been valid, considering that Eisav was in effect selling something that was not yet his. This seems to contradict the Halachic rule that one cannot sell a Davar Shelo Ba LeOlam, something that does not yet exist.
There are a number of approaches to answer this.
