BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5773 ~ PARSHAS BEHAR- BECHUKOSAI ~Questionable Kinyanim
This week's parshiyos conclude sefer Vayikra, a sefer that primarily discusses laws and concepts of kedusha, holiness. Vayikra begins with the laws of korbanos and the Bais Hamikdash, and then continues with the laws of kedusha that apply to the entire Jewish people, such as the laws of kashrut and forbidden marriages. The sefer concludes with the laws of hekdesh, donations to holy causes. Perhaps the sequence of topics is intended to teach us that not only are korbanos
and the Bais Hamikdash holy, and not only are we obligated to make ourselves holy, but we are also supposed to make our
money and our possessions holy. The Torah states "Ish ki yakdish es baiso", "a man who donates his house to hekdesh". The Gemarah (BM 69b) derives from here that one can only make a donation of something that is b'reshuso, in one's possession or under one's authority. This serves as the source that one cannot give, sell, or donate possessions that are not
b'rshuso.(AUDIO VERSION HERE)
