BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5774 Parshas Yisro- Honoring Grandparents
n this week's parsha we read about the Ten Commandments. One of these commandments is to honor one's parents. In the Shulchan Aruch (YD 240:24) there is a dispute whether there is an obligation to honor one's grandparents. The Rema holds that one is indeed obligated to honor one's grandparents, although honoring one's parents take precedence.
Interestingly, the Tana D'vei Eliyahu (Raba 16) teaches that in the first ten generations of mankind --from who we all descend-- everyone honored and cared for their parents. Grandparents, however, were neglected. Noach, however, cared for his grandparents and all other living ancestors, and for this reason he was called a tzaddik - righteous man. We see from here that it is certainly praiseworthy to care for one's grandparents.(AUDIO HERE)
