BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5774 Parshas Pekudei: Freedom of Speech - Freedom of Press
This week's parsha discusses the clothing of the kohanim. One of the garments that the kohen gadol wore was the robe. As Rashi explains, there were hollow, pomegranate shaped balls, sewn to the bottom of the robe.
The Chasam Sofer (Drashos), explains the meaning of these balls based on the Gemarah (Zevachim 88b) that teaches that the robe atoned for the sin of lashon horah. The Chovas Halevavos writes that when one speaks lashon horah one loses all of one's mitzvos. However, explains the Chasam Sofer, when one repents for the sin of lashon horah, one's mitzvos are returned. It is for this reason that the robe had pomegranates on its bottom: to symbolize that once the robe would atone for lashon horah, the sinner would once again be filled with many mitzvos as he was originally, just like the many seeds of a pomegranate.
