RABBI WEIN ON VAYEISHEV 5777
Modern writers and commentators have found the biblical narratives of the book of Bereshith irresistible in their penchant for psychoanalyzing people described there in terms of modern understanding and current correctness. In so doing they do a great disservice to Jewish tradition and present a distorted picture of the message that the Bible is attempting to convey.
RABBI WEIN ON CONSISTENCY
Consistency, like many other character traits in life that are primarily positive, can turn into a negative trait if carried to an extreme. We are all aware that consistency is essential to good parenting, meaningful education, business and commercial success, as well as to political and governmental stability.
OU TORAH Vayeshev: Fostering Resilience By Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb
It helped him through the horrors of the Holocaust. It helped his children adapt to life in the newly established State of Israel and gave them the courage to fight heroically in its War of Independence. His grandchildren used it in their struggle to retain a religious lifestyle in the face of the challenges of modernity. His great-grandchild had anticipated using it at his bar mitzvah.
OU TORAH No Favorites on Chanukah! Rabbi Weinreb on Parshat Vayeshev

Envy is surely one of the most insidious of human emotions. It is a self-destructive emotion, because it often leads a person to act against his own best interests, as he attempts to redress the situation that caused him so much envy. It is also damaging to relationships with others, and can have disastrous social effects.
King of Shlock Alert! Nachum Hosted the Legendary Lenny Solomon Live at JM in the AM
Nachum had the pleasure of welcoming The King of Shlock, Lenny Solomon to the studio during this morning’s JM in the AM while in middle of his annual Chanukah Concert Tour in the US. They played several songs, discuss the tour and Lenny even performed live in the studio. Visit the Shlock Rock website HERE.OU TORAH What is the Theme of the Stories of Genesis? Britain's Former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
One of the most fundamental questions about the Torah turns out to be one of the hardest to answer. What, from the call of God to Abraham in Genesis 12 to the death of Joseph in Genesis 50, is the basic religious principle being taught? What does the entire set of stories about Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their wives, together with Jacob’s sons and daughter, actually tell us? Abraham brought monotheism to a world that had forgotten it, but where do we see this in the actual text of the Torah itself?
RAV KOOK ON Vayeishev Part 3: The Special Teshuvah of Reuben
“Reuben returned to the pit, but Joseph was no longer in the pit. He tore his clothes [in grief].” (Gen. 37:29)
Where was Reuben coming from? Why wasn’t he together with the other brothers?
According to the Midrash, Reuben was “occupied with sackcloth and fasting,” as he repented for changing his father’s sleeping arrangements. (The word vayashov (“he returned”) can also mean “he repented.”)
The Midrash continues:
“The Holy One said: No one has ever sinned before Me and repented, but you [Reuben] are the first to repent. As you live, one of your descendants will stand up and be the first to urge repentance. And who was this descendant? Hosea, who called out, “Return, Israel, to the Eternal your God” (Hosea 14:2).”
RAV KOOK ON Vayeshev Part 2: The Reality of Dreams
oseph, the ambitious protagonist of the final four readings of Genesis, was the “master of dreams.” In addition to his own two dreams of future greatness, Joseph was called upon to interpret four more dreams: the dreams of the royal baker and steward, and Pharaoh’s double dream about the seven-year famine.

Rav and Rebbe by Rabbi Chaim Dalfin IS AT ROSENBLOOMS

Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi: Prophecy in an Age of Uncertainty IS AT ROSENBLOOMS
Babylonia fell and the Temple was rebuilt, miracles were at once present and hidden but Judea remained subject to the Persian Empire. The prophets Haggai and Zechariah spoke of imminent redemption yet most Jews remained in exile. Prophecy ceased with Malachi, and a chapter in Jewish history came to an end, paving the way for a new era with the Oral Law at its heart: the era of the rabbis. At the end of the age of the prophets, hope mixed with disappointment as the people of Israel tried to come to terms with this partial salvation, wondering what it meant for the covenantal relationship between God and Israel.
Often overlooked, the books of the final prophets hold the key to understanding the monumental transition that overtook the Jewish world at the beginning of the Second Temple Era and that ushered in the postbiblical age. In Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi: Prophecy in an Age of Uncertainty, Rabbi Hayyim Angel brings to life one of the least understood eras of Jewish history. In this work, Rabbi Angel takes the reader through a tumultuous world of joy mingled with insecurity in the twilight of prophecy.Makes a great supplement to the OU'S Nach Yomi which is now about to finish Zechariah.
By His Light: Character and Values in the Service of God IS AT ROSENBLOOMS
In this volume, Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein explores the development of the religious personality. He advocates a life centered on the service of God, but recognizes multiple paths to this goal. Acknowledging that both the Jewish value system and human experience are multifaceted, he examines the relevant issues from an unusually wide perspective.
Rabbi Lichtenstein s essays reflect not only a staunch commitment to Halakha and a firm grounding in rigorous Torah study, but also a deep spirituality, a profound moral sensitivity, and a keen awareness of both the challenges and opportunities of modernity. While being enlightened by Rabbi Lichtenstein s penetrating analyses and wide-ranging learning, the reader will also be inspired by the beauty of his vision of the religious life.

OU Kosher Halacha Yomis: Chanukah for Rav Belsky
OU Kosher Halacha Yomis
This column is dedicated in memory of:
Rav Chaim Yisroel ben Reb Dov HaLevi Belsky, zt'l
Senior OU Kosher Halachic Consultant from 1987-2016.Which comes first on motza’ai shabbos, Chanukah lights or havdala?
There is a dispute among the poskim concerning this question. Normally, in selecting the sequence of two mitzvos we are guided by the principle of tadir v’she’eino tadir – tadir kodem (the more frequent mitzvah is performed first). As such, the Taz (681:1) rules that Havdallah is recited first because it is the more frequently performed mitzvah. The Biur Halacha (ibid.) quotes many acharonim who agree with the Taz including the Maharal MiPrague, the Tosfos Yom Tov and the Pri Chodosh. This was also the custom of the Chazon Ish (Sefer Hilchos Chanukah, p.44 footnote 46). However, the Mechaber and the Rama (681:2), followed by the Magen Avraham, Eliyahu Raba and Gra (see Biur Halacha ibid.), maintain that Ner Chanukah comes first. Their rationale is that delaying the departure of Shabbos is more important than the principle of tadir. A second reason
to prioritize Chanukah is that one performs Pirsumei Nisa (publicizing the miracle) with the kindling of the Chanukah lights.
In Shul, the accepted minhag is to light Chanukah lights first (Mishna Berura and Biur Halacha, ibid.). Possibly, this is because the great Pirsumei Nisa for an entire shul is very significant (see Aruch HaShulchan 681:2). At home one should follow his own minhag since there is a valid basis for both viewpoints (MB and BH, ibid.). If one has no minhag, he can choose what to do since both are valid minhagim (see end of Biur Halacha, ibid., in the name of the Pri Megodim).
It should be noted that one is prohibited from doing any melacha after Shabbos, even if Shabbos has concluded, until he recites Ata Chonantanu in Shmoneh Esrei. If he forgot to say Ata Chonantanu, he should say the words Baruch hamvdil bein kodesh l’chol before lighting (MB 681:2).
Opting Out of Hanukkah Lighting? + Polygraphs & DNA Tests and More / SHC Weekly ~ VaYishlah 5777 Part 1
Are paternity, DNA and other tests admissible in Bet Din?
By Rav Yaakov Rappaport
Forensic experts, law enforcement and justice departments worldwide employ various methods to determine whether a person is telling the truth or not. Blood tests, DNA tests and polygraphs are all admissible in court. In this article, we will examine the attitude of Halacha towards such methods.
Are DNA Tests Reliable?

RABBI WEIN ON VAYISHLACH 5777
The prophet of Israel, describing what can unfortunately be characterized as the usual situation in Jewish life, states that it is comparable to one who flees from the lion and finds one's self in the embrace of a bear. Our father Jacob, who barely escapes from the treachery of Lavan, soon finds himself confronted by the deadly mob of his brother Eisav.
Jacob, in his confrontation with Lavan, chooses the option of flight as he removes himself from the territory controlled by Lavan and his sons. But this option of flight is no longer possible in his contest with Eisav. Jacob is in his own land, the land of his ancestors, the land promised to him personally by God Himself, to be his rightful residence. As such, Jacob has nowhere to run.
