Community Safety Meeting on Thursday Evening to Discuss Two Shooting Deaths in East Rogers Park

Dear Neighbor,

I am horrified to report that while many in our neighborhood were celebrating the holidays, our neighboring community of East Rogers Park suffered two shooting deaths this week. On Sunday morning, Douglass Watts was fatally shot on the 1400 block of W. Sherwin. On Monday night, Eliyahu Moscowitz was fatally shot around 10:20 p.m., while walking in Loyola Park near the lakefront. Mr. Moscowitz was a resident of the 50th Ward.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson confirmed that the same gun was used in both shootings, and it is believed that the same offender is responsible for both homicides.

I have been in constant contact with 24th District Police Commander Roberto Nieves, and attended a press conference today with the full leadership of the Chicago Police Department and the mayor.

Also, I am organizing a community safety meeting with the Chicago Police Department for Thursday evening. Please watch your inboxes for the details as soon as I am able to confirm them.

Witnesses described the offender as a black male, with a thin build and wearing dark clothing, including a mask that obscured his face below the eyes. If anyone has any information about the shooting, the police are asking that they contact the Area North Bureau of Detectives at (312) 744-8200. Anonymous Tips can be submitted to TIPSOFT.COM.

The police have released the following image from a surveillance camera near the shooting on Sherwin:

These horrible crimes are receiving the full attention of the police department and the City of Chicago. At the press conference today, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson cautioned residents to "go about your daily lives, but be safe, smart and vigilant at the same time."

I hope you will all join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of Douglass Watts and Eliyahu Moscowitz. And I hope to see you all at the important safety meeting on Thursday evening.

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
