R' Abish Brodt on Performing at the Siyum
"You're singing for Klal Yisroel!"

Reb Abish Brodt Reflects Upon His Experiences Singing at Siyumei HaShas

It's difficult to describe just how much The Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi has changed and advanced since the Ninth Siyum in 1990.

But one person who was a visible part of that Siyum program and has joined for each subsequent one is Reb Abish Brodt. At each Siyum, Reb Abish's powerful, hartzige voice has brought out the emotions of the Mesaymim and all of Klal Yisroel in a way only neginah can do.

The first time he sang at The Siyum, the prospect seemed very daunting for Reb Abish. He was strongly encouraged by the Tenker Rav zt"l to accept the request. The Rav was personally mispallel for Reb Abish's hatzlachah as The Siyum commenced. Despite a broken microphone, the singing went well and greatly inspired participants.

Attendance at the Tenth Siyum was substantially higher and once again Reb Abish captured the hearts and neshamos of everyone in the arena. The crowd's dancing following the Hadran was spontaneous and especially lively. While singing, Reb Abish was instructed by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Golding to go beyond the allotted eleven minutes. The emotions were simply too precious and inspiring to cut short. Reb Abish ended up singing nearly twice as long as planned.

Each Siyum brought additional logistical changes. The upcoming Thirteenth Siyum, which will be joined by over 100,000 yidden worldwide, b'ezras Hashem, will be his largest audience ever – quite unimaginable back in 1990.

However, to Reb Abish, the mission remains constant: "You're singing for Klal Yisroel. You're delivering a message." And once again, his eyes are turned to the Ribbono Shel Olam to help him strike the right chord.

In case you missed it...
Day in and day out – on workdays and precious off days - the wives of The Daf sacrifice their husband's company and help. Yet they not only "allow" their husbands to go learn, they encourage them to do so. This gives the men motivation and presence of mind to learn even when they are tired or overburdened. Attendees could be seen wiping their tears as Rav Schwab dedicated the historic Siyum to the neshamos of the 1.5 million children who were killed al kiddush Hashem during the Holocaust. "Hadran alach Tinokos, V'Hadrach alan," Rav Schwab cried out. His words still ring in the ears of Siyum attendees on this world and, no doubt, ring even louder in the olam ha'emes. Watch the video
