Erev Shabbat Parshat Vayakhel-Pekudey March 20, 2020
Dear K.I.N.S. Family: As I said of in my pre-Shabbat drasha ( video link / audio link ) with our shul closed and all of us limiting contact with others, tonight and tomorrow will seem so very surreal. Yet, despite all that we will be missing, we still have the opportunity of finding new meaning in Shabbat. Whether we use this time for added Torah learning, for reconnecting with our families, or for more meaningful and thoughtful prayer – this Shabbat is an opportunity to discover new aspects of ourselves and our relationship with the Creator. It won't be easy, and there will be a strangeness to the day. But instead of letting that strangeness hold us back, I pray that we will find ways to add meaning to our lives. The following is a brief outline of things to remember for this Shabbat – consider them my virtual page announcements! EREV SHABBAT: - In every way, our preparations for Shabbat should be no different than at any other time. We should prepare our homes and ourselves and dress for Shabbat.
- For those with young children, it is especially important that they sense the normalcy of today and the uniqueness of tonight. Please make a "big deal" of getting ready for Shabbat.
- Candle Lighting tonight is at 6:44 pm
KABBALAT SHABBAT and MAARIV - While women accept upon themselves the restrictions of Shabbat when they light candles since the family will be a separate unit for this Shabbat, the rest of the family should accept Shabbat together. Therefore, when the head of the household recites Kabbalat Shabbat, the entire family to cease from doing any forbidden melachot and accept Shabbat as well.
- For those with young children, this is a wonderful opportunity to daven together, and even to allow one of the children to act as the chazzan for Kabbalat Shabbat. Sing together Lecha Dodi!
- Because there is no minyan, borchu is not recited, vayichulu is said (without a minyan is merely a recitation of appropriate pesukim), but then we skip Magen Avot and go directly to aleinu.
- Meals throughout Shabbat should be joyous, with zemirot and divrei Torah.
SHACHARIT, TORAH READING & MUSAF - Ideally, everyone should daven at the same time. While there is no minyan, there is still the educational value of family and prayer.
- Here is a link for this week's Torah reading. While reading the Torah from a Chumash does not fulfill the communal obligation of Torah reading on Shabbat, it is a chance to learn together the Parsha as a family, doing so after the end of Shacharit and before Musaf.
- We will miss this week's special Torah reading of Parshat HaChodesh
- Yikum Purkan is not recited when davening without a minyan.
- This Shabbat, we "Bentsch Rosh Chodesh." The Birkat HaChodesh can be said in private, and Rosh Chodesh is on Thursday ("Yom Chamishee"). There is no need to know or announce the molad.
- Because this is one of the special Shabbatot, Av HaRachamim is not recited.
- Musaf is recited as usual.
MINCHA
- Mincha is recited as regular, and it can be recited as early as 1:29 p.m.
- Following Mincha, eat Seudah Shlishit as usual. But once again, use this as a time for words of Torah and Zemirot.
- Maariv is recited as usual.
- Shabbat ends at 7:55 pm with Havdalah
As we enter this period of a "new normal" we need to do all that we can to hold onto the joy and beauty of Shabbat.
And, I look forward to learning with many of you Sunday morning, 9:00am in my Navi Shiur, or 11:00 in our special Pre-Pesach Seminar: Pesach for Rookies and Repeats. Both of these classes will be livestreamed at https://zoom.us/j/8618119980 and later archieved on our website.
Of course, if you have any questions, please feel free to be in contact with me matanky@icja.org, or call me at 773-259-5620.
I wish everyone a safe, healthy and joyful Shabbat!
