BRI PARSHAH TIDBITS
The sin that brings the deepest despair to a person, making them feel worthless, is related to the transgression of the brit (covenant), looking at immodest images, hearing forbidden things, etc.

The sadness and fall in one's spirits that follow such sins distance a person from the Creator and from the hope that Hashem desires that very person in this world.

In our parshah, we see how every individual is important and counted. After the plague that occurred due to the sin with the daughters of Moav, Hashem commanded Moshe Rabbeinu to count the people of Israel. Precisely then, when they might have felt utterly worthless, Hashem shows His love for them. You fell? I count you! You are valuable! Every Jew is valuable! One only needs to rise, strengthen oneself, and return to Hashem.

As Rebbe Nachman writes in Rebbe Nachman's Wisdom (#71), every sin has a form of teshuva (repentance), even the gravest sin in the world. Just return to Him.

Shabbat Shalom!
