When I think back to this parsha last year as we marked the 2023 Shabbat Project, I'm reminded of the trepidation and the darkness that hung so heavily over the Jewish world in the immediate aftermath of October 7. The situation felt so dire, with the Shabbat Project taking place just weeks later. Now, a year on, as we mark the 2024 Shabbat Project, we have an opportunity to pause and reflect on how far we've come.
We can reflect on this transformation through the prism of our parsha, where God promises Abraham, "I will surely bless you, and greatly increase your descendants like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand on the seashore" (Bereshit 22:17). What is the meaning of these comparisons?
The Kli Yakar, one of our great Torah commentators, explains that the "stars of the heavens" refer to the times in Jewish history when we are strong, successful, and thriving—shining and sharing light like stars that illuminate the night sky. The "sand on the seashore", on the other hand, like sand that is trodden under foot, represents the times that we are struggling, persecuted, and downtrodden.
He notes that the verse specifies "the sand of the seashore", not just any sand, such as that of the desert. This imagery evokes waves relentlessly pounding on the shore, symbolizing the persecution, antisemitism, and grave challenges that God tells Abraham his descendants will face. Yet, just as the waves of the ocean can never overwhelm the sand on the beach, our enemies can never overcome us.
The verse continues: "Your descendants shall inherit the gate of their enemy, and all the nations of the Earth shall bless themselves by your descendants." This is a Divine promise that, no matter what, we will endure and, ultimately, thrive.
Looking back on this past year, it began with us being pounded like the sand on the shore. Tremendous pain and suffering persists. The hostages are still captive, brave IDF troops continue to fight, and many families mourn fallen soldiers and those who were murdered. Meanwhile, it has been a year of resurging antisemitism led by the anti-Israel movement in the Diaspora.
Yet we have also shone like stars this year. We have seen, through God's blessings and promises, how the state of Israel has fought back, achieving great victories: the complete defeat of Hamas in Gaza, the crippling of Hezbollah in Lebanon, the exposure of Iran's weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
As we prepare to embrace this year's Shabbat Project, we are reminded of both the resilience of the sand and the brilliance of the stars. Looking back, we can acknowledge how much has been achieved, knowing that Israel and the Jewish people are stronger and safer today than we were a year ago on October 6, when we were unaware of all the terrible dangers we faced.
The journey continues. There are dangers, problems, pain, and suffering ahead. But the pathway to becoming the shining stars we were destined to be remains illuminated. At the heart of these dual ideas—our resilience and survival, and our ability to thrive and light up the world—is Shabbat. Shabbat is a pillar mitzvah of the Torah and, as our sages say, our spiritual soulmate. Shabbat gives us the inner resolve and strength to withstand the most ferocious forces arraigned against us. As our God-given gift it is our guiding light, giving us the Divine values, ideas, inspiration, joy, and connection to shine brightly.
The Shabbat Project embodies this vision. In these historic times of crisis and opportunity, the Jewish world needs Shabbat more than ever. Shabbat will give us the strength to cope with our challenges, and the inspiration and values to secure the future of the Jewish people. It illuminates the path to our Jewish destiny and our Divine mission. It has within it, our sages reveal, the spiritual merit and power of redemption. Let it be our rallying cry for a brighter future for us all.
Shabbat Shalom.
Chief Rabbi Goldstein
