More than 100 Seniors Gather to Celebrate Lag B'Omer at CMC

On Friday May 18, in perfect balmy outdoor conditions, more than 100 seniors gathered to celebrate Lag B'Omer at CMC. The joyous atmosphere and exuberant mood of the party was contagious, uplifting all hearts and spirits.

In addition to enjoying a delicious special lunch of pizza, salad and dessert, the seniors heard fascinating insights into the history and meaning of Lag B'Omer, and took advantage of the auspicious occasion to join in heartfelt prayer for the safety and wellbeing of Israel.

As always, the wonderful live music was a terrific highlight of the party, with classic melodies and traditional songs stirring the memories and hearts of all participants. Another especially memorable highlight was provided by the captivating performance of Cheder Lubavitch's marching band of talented and enthusiastic young musical artists.

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICES

KOSHER HOSPITAL MEALS

Over the course of many years, CMC has continued to work closely with many local hospitals to maintain and upgrade their systems and practices for their kosher meal services. As a result, many hospitals now provide much more information on their kosher menus, including specific kosher certifications for various individual products.

As CMC continues to work with hospitals to strengthen their kosher meal service for the benefit of all kosher consumers, the community should be careful to maintain awareness of the following:

  • Each individual item that is included as part of a kosher meal must be served in its original packaging that bears kosher certification.
  • A heated double-wrapped kosher meal may only be unwrapped by (or in front of) the patient.
  • Kosher-consumer patients may not accept any hospital-prepared food whatsoever.
  • A mistake may sometimes occur, resulting in a kosher dairy product being included in a kosher meat tray. Therefore it is incumbent on the patient to double-check each tray to make sure that the tray does not include any mixture of meat and dairy products.
  • Dairy products are only considered "Chalav Yisrael" if clearly certified as such by the kosher certification agency.
  • All kosher meals should be served with disposable (dishes and) cutlery only.

Call CMC:

  • To request meal delivery from UBCK (United Bikur Cholim Kitchen)
  • If you're stuck in the hospital without access to kosher meal services because of an after-hours admission or because of a long wait in the Emergency Room
  • If the hospital runs out of kosher meals

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE ONE'S TEFILLIN AND MEZUZOT CHECKED?

THE SCROLL

Catching Errors

When writing a tefillin or mezuzah scroll, even the best sofrim can sometimes (but hopefully only very rarely!) make mistakes.

Deterioration

Even the most perfectly-written tefillin or mezuzah scroll can become ruined and invalidated with the passage of time, especially if it is placed in an environment of extreme temperatures and/or excessive moisture (humidity).

Maintenance and Prevention

In addition to confirming that a tefillin or mezuzah scroll is (still) kosher or discovering that it has become ruined, a periodic check-up from CMC's expert sofer also includes critical maintenance, which can significantly extend the life of a kosher scroll.

For example, by proactively touching up the ink of those letters or crowns that are just beginning to crack or fade, the sofer can prevent much worse (and potentially unfixable) problems from developing in the future.

THE BATIM AND STRAPS

In addition to checking the Tefillin scrolls, CMC's expert sofer also checks the batim and straps for evidence of deterioration and issues that may require repair or replacement.

Common examples of such issues include:

  • Warping
  • Separation of compartments
  • Corners that are rounded or chipped
  • Torn threads
  • Peeling or faded paint
  • Tearing/narrowing straps
  • Loose/misshapen knots

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF CMC TEFILLIN & MEZUZAH CHECKING

  1. For all mezuzah-checking orders, CMC provides "dismounting" and "remounting" services at your home or place of business, at no additional charge.
  2. CMC also ensures same-day turnaround of all mezuzahs and tefillin that are checked, providing priceless convenience for no additional charge.

CMC's expert sofer comes to Chicago for a few days each month to check tefillin and mezuzot. To schedule an appointment, please call CMC or visit our website.

TOUCHING LIVES

SENIOR CENTER HIGHLIGHTS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

In addition to the regular schedule packed with programs, classes and activities, there is always something new and exciting for seniors to explore, experience and enjoy at CMC Senior Center!

New Classes

"Write Your Story" is the name of a terrific weekly writing program for seniors, taught by Mrs. Goldie Goldbloom on Mondays at 1:00pm.

On Tuesdays at 2:00pm, Mrs. Tsyrl Turen has begun teaching a new topic, called "Talking with G-d: An Introduction to Prayer."

On Thursdays at 2:00pm, Rabbi Michael Myers is teaching a new weekly class all about the city of Jerusalem. The first class was so well attended that it needed to be moved to a larger space!

Special Presentations

On Wednesday May 14, dozens of seniors enthusiastically participated in a fascinating "Anti-Inflammatory Food Tasting and Demo," expertly led by Mrs. Valerie Kanter.

On Wednesday May 21, author Chaim Rosenberg led a very interesting discussion introducing his new book, "Children of the American Jewish Ghetto: Stories of Struggle and Achievement, from 1881 Until World War One."

Living Fully: My Jewish Life Without Sight

A packed crowd of seniors listened, spellbound, as Mrs. Mindy Giffin spoke about learning to cope and even flourish without her eyesight.

After becoming blind at a young age, Mindy decided to learn strategies for making her life easier instead of dwelling on the negative.

Mindy showed the crowd tools that are adaptive for the sight-impaired, including a special clock, her braille cookbook, various tools to help with cooking, and many others.

Following the program, several seniors were moved to remark how beautiful and uplifting it was, and participants continued enthusing about it long afterwards.

Coming Soon in June

At 1:00pm on Wednesday June 4, Mrs. Leah Polin will deliver a presentation entitled, "My Grandson, Hersh," focusing on the life and legacy of her grandson, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, whose life was cruelly taken from him after being kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and held hostage in Gaza.

Excitement is building for the first major seasonal event to be held this year in Faigy's Garden, scheduled for Wednesday June 11. The party will offer terrific food, fun activities and much more; stay tuned for details!

On Wednesday June 18, there will be a program called, "Holocaust Postal History: Harrowing Journeys Revealed Through the Letters and Cards of the Victims."

And on Thursday, June 26, Mrs. Lisa Fishman returns to CMC with an always-engaging musical program for women.
