BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5773 ~ PARSHAS EMOR ~ Contemporary Cohanim - The Reliability Of Our Genealogical Traditions
his week's parsha discusses many mitzvos that are specific to Kohanim. The Gemara (Erchin 14a) makes it clear that Kohanim and Yisraelim are both equally part of the Jewish nation. Nevertheless, the kohanim do possess an extra degree of kedusha and they were given many extra mitzvot to perform.
The Chinuch explains that since Kohanim are the messengers of the Yisraelim to perform the holy work in the Beis Hamikdash, they must be even purer than everyone else. It is for this reason that the Kohanim were given so many additional mitzvos. The Ramban and others explain, that with their extra purification, the entire nation becomes more holy and purified, and are worthy of Hashem's shechina resting among them.
