We all have our roles in life; whether we are in kollel, a teacher, working, or going to Minyan three times a day. We get comfortable in our role and identify with it. Then, life throws us a curve ball and we suffer from a role change, yeshivas, schools, shuls and many businesses close for the unforeseen future and we are all torn away from our regular role and thrown into a different one. t is imperative that we learn to accept our role change.
We may feel that things are out of our control. That which we recognize as important we are unable to do. Instead we are stuck doing other trivial matters. This thought is furthest from the truth. Hashem is in full control of the world. He is declaring, “What I want from you now is not to daven with a Minyan; it is to embrace the situation with happiness that I am putting you in and to take full advantage of it.”
A true story to be this in perspective:
There were a group of Bachurim from Yeshivas Zichron Melech who were heading to a friend’s chasuna. One of them pointed out that they would not have time to daven Mincha after the chuppah. They would need to daven now. A quick glance at the clock showed them that if they would daven with a Minyan they would miss the chuppah; however, if they would daven on their own, they would make the Chuppah on time. What should they do?
“They called their Rosh Hayeshiva, R’ Chaim Epstien and solicited his guidance. He said, “If the chassan is going to look around and not see his friend’s he will be saddened. You have no choice but to daven without a Minyan and get there as fast as you can.”
“There was one bachur who was disturbed by this direction. He expressed to the Rosh Hayeshiva, “I am twenty years old. Since the day of my Bar Mitzvah I have not missed a Minyan. How can I just give it up now?”
“R’ Chaim Epstien replied, “Yiddishkeit is not baseball; there is no objective to have a winning streak. In Judaism our objective is to fulfill Hashem’s desire in every situation. Now he wants you to miss a minyan so that you can fulfill the mitzvah of bringing joy to a chassan.”
If we can overcome the anxiety of the virus we will find that this is a great opportunity to achieve מנוחת הנפש , inner-calm. Hashem has put our life on hold, He wants us to focus on developing an inner-calmness.
