Storm Response Update

August 11, 2020

Dear Neighbor,

It was a rough night for many of our neighbors. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down on the North Side, and nearly 71,000 Chicago homes are still without power—including more than 3,700 right here in the 50th Ward. Many trees fell down throughout the neighborhood, blocking streets, and making it even more difficult for emergency crews to repair the damage.

I have been in constant communication with the Bureau of Forestry and ComEd, and have been driving through the Ward to see what areas most need attention. My office is open to offer assistance to those affected by the storm. If you are in need, please call me at (773) 262-1050 or email info@50thwardchicago.com so I can help.

Thank you to all the emergency crews who have been working around the clock to get our community back up and running. Thank you to all the neighborhood residents for your patience as we deal with this unprecedented disaster. Unfortunately, the damage was severe, and we still have a long road ahead of us.

As I reported last night, Forestry's main priority is still relieving tree emergencies, including blocked streets and downed power lines. ComEd is working as fast as it can, but hundreds of thousands of homes are without power throughout northern Illinois and a lot of infrastructure needs to be rebuilt. I will continue to work with both agencies to make sure our community's needs are met.

The best thing we can all do right now is to help each other. Please reach out to your neighbors and friends without electricity and offer what assistance you can. Residents throughout the city—and here in the 50th Ward—are also banding together to clear tree debris off parkways and streets. Just be careful to avoid power lines, and maintain proper social distancing.

I will continue to update you all as soon as more information is available. Stay safe and please let me know if you need any help!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
