Plan Your Vote
Election Day is this Tuesday, November 3. The election will look different this year due to the pandemic. However, it is just as important as ever that you participate. Whether you choose to vote early, vote by mail, or vote in person on Election Day, please just remember to cast your ballot. Our democracy relies on it.
Early Voting is underway at Warren Park (6601 N. Western) and locations across the city. New this year, voters can also vote at any Early Voting site on Election Day instead of solely at their designated polling place.
The remaining hours for Early Voting are as follows:
Friday, October 30: 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday, October 31: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Sunday, November 1: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Monday, November 2: 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Tuesday, November 3: 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.
If you already applied to Vote By Mail, please remember to return your completed ballot as soon as possible to ensure it arrives in time to be counted. By law, any Vote By Mail Ballot Return Envelope that is mailed, postmarked or certified on or before Election Day may be counted if it arrives within 14 days of Election Day.
Please also make sure to follow all of the instructions on the ballot to avoid any potential disqualifications.
Secured Drop Boxes are in place throughout the city to offer an additional option to return Vote By Mail ballots. The drop boxes are at every Early Voting site, as well as select libraries. The 50th Ward has two drop box locations: Warren Park (6601 N. Western) and the Northtown Library (6800 N. Western).
Please note: The Warren Park drop box will be available through Election Day; however, the Northtown Library drop box will only be available until Monday, November 2 at 5 p.m. For more information, including a complete list of locations and hours of availability, visit www.chicagoelections.gov/en/drop-boxes.html.
As always, voters have the right to vote in person on Election Day. All polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3. Many polling places have changed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The current list is available here (on Page 50). The list is subject to change due to the evolving COVID situation.
Tougher COVID-19 Restrictions As I reported earlier this week, Governor J.B. Pritzker is imposing new coronavirus restrictions for the City of Chicago. Effective immediately, indoor dining and bar service are prohibited throughout the city, and gatherings are limited to 25 people. In response, Chicago is modifying its business curfew. Non-essential businesses must now be closed to the public nightly from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Chicago is averaging more than 800 new cases of COVID-19 a day and our positivity rate just passed 8%. The only way we are going to turn this around is if every single one of us follows the rules. Practice social distancing, strictly limit social gatherings, wash your hands frequently, and always wear a face covering when in public.

Small Business Improvement Fund Small business owners will soon be able to apply for funding to improve their facilities. Between November 2 and December 1, the City of Chicago will accept Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) applications from business owners in the Touhy/Western TIF.
The SBIF program uses Tax Increment Financing (TIF) revenue to help owners repair or remodel their facilities and improve their businesses. Grants up to $100,000 are available for eligible work. The current round of funding is only available for business owners within the Touhy/Western TIF. To find out if your business is within the TIF, visit https://webapps1.cityofchicago.org/ChicagoTif.
Applications will be accepted starting on Monday, November 2 at 9 a.m. and must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1. Interested businesses and property owners can visit somercor.com/sbif to find the application and more information.
The Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) will be hosting a webinar to provide an overview of the SBIF program and application process on Wednesday, November 4 at 1 p.m. Business representatives can register here. Devon Avenue Detour Eastbound Devon Avenue traffic will soon be detoured to accommodate sewer main installation at Albany Avenue. The work will increase the sewer capacity and reduce the risk of flooding for the area.
During construction, eastbound Devon traffic will be detoured via Kedzie Avenue to Lincoln, then Peterson, then Western, and back to Devon. Westbound traffic will continue uninterrupted.
I will keep you updated on this project as the construction progresses.
Police CAPS Meetings There will be two CAPS meetings this week, covering the entire area of the 50th Ward that is north of Devon Avenue.
The CAPS meeting for Beat 2411, stretching from Howard to Pratt and from Kedzie to Ridge, will be held on Tuesday, November 3 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The CAPS meeting for Beat 2412, stretching from Pratt to Devon and from Kedzie to Ridge, will be held on Wednesday, November 4 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Both meetings will be on Zoom. Login details will be available next week here. These events are great opportunities to meet the officers who patrol your community and discuss safety concerns directly with the police and your neighbors. Daylight Saving Time Ends and FREE Smoke Detectors Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. this Saturday night. Please remember to turn your clocks back one hour before going to bed tomorrow.
I also want to remind everyone to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when you change your clocks. Batteries need to be replaced in alarms at least once a year. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that you also test your alarms every month to make sure they are still working.
I have a limited supply of FREE smoke detectors available in my office, courtesy of the Chicago Fire Department. If you need one, please stop by at 2949 W. Devon and give us a call. A masked staff member will bring one out to you.
Halloween Safety Guidelines The City of Chicago has issued guidelines on how to have a fun and safe Halloween. The focus is on masks (not just for trick-or-treaters!), avoiding congregating, practicing social distancing, and absolutely no house parties.
Here are the eight guidelines to have a safe Halloween this year:
Rule 1: Everyone has to wear a mask or face covering (a real one, not just a costume one).
Rule 2: Let everyone know if your home is participating in trick-or-treating or not (try downloading one of the official "Halloweek" signs here).
Rule 3: If you are handing out candy, remember to socially distance and use hand sanitizer.
Rule 4: Stay on the move! Less congregating means more houses and more candy for trick or-treaters.
Rule 5: Do not reach into candy bowls while trick or treating, and eat candy only at home after washing your hands.
Rule 6: No Haunted Houses.
Rule 7: Trick-or-treating groups should be 6 people or less.
Rule 8: No house parties of any kind (large or small).

Community Alerts from the 24th District Police | | | 50th Ward Donation Drive
We are collecting donations of food, clothing, and household essentials at the 50th Ward Office. Many of our neighbors are still grappling with the economic ramifications of COVID-19, and any goods you can spare will make a tremendous difference to those in need.
Drop off donations at 2949 W. Devon during regular business hours. Call before coming to make sure a staff member is available to pick up the donation outside the office. Staff will wear masks and gloves and follow social distancing procedures.
Please consider donating non-perishable food, clothing, and any other goods you can spare—every item helps!
Flu Shot Clinics
Now that the summer is over, flu season is officially here. Public health officials are warning about the dangerous confluence of influenza and COVID-19 and the possibility of overtaxing the health care system. This year, it is particularly important to get your flu shot to keep you and your family protected.
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is hosting over 40 recurring flu clinics at large locations across the city, which have the proper capacity for safe events. The schedule is available online at chicago.gov/flu.
Even if you do not typically get the flu shot, please consider getting one this year. This is especially true for people who are at higher risk of being exposed to or developing serious complications from flu and COVID-19, as well as those who are caregivers of people who are at higher risk from these two diseases. More information can be found at chicago.gov/flu. If you have any questions, contact your health care provider.
