Public Safety Alert | | | | Dear Neighbor,
I am very upset to report that there were three carjackings in our neighborhood over the last few days. The police are investigating the incidents, but it is important that we all remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
The police have issued a community alert for the first two cases and are still gathering information on the third case. In the first two cases, the victims were seated inside their vehicles when approached by 2-3 armed offenders. The offenders fled in the victims' vehicles. Two of the vehicles have since been recovered by the police.
The details of the incidents, as reported by the 24th District police, are as follows: - 7300 block of N. Western Avenue – November 30 at 3:30 a.m.
- 6400 block of N. Oakley Avenue – November 30 at 4:35 p.m.
- 7000 block of N. California Avenue - December 1 at 6:00 a.m.
The offenders are described as African American males, between 15 and 25 years of age, approximately 5'10" - 6'02" and 180 - 200 lbs. Offenders were armed with a rifle and a handgun.
These incidents are part of a disturbing trend of carjackings and automobile thefts across our city and neighboring suburbs. This is a very real problem, and I want to assure everyone that the city is taking it very seriously. I will continue to work with the local police commanders to make sure they have the resources they need to keep the 50th Ward safe.
In the meantime, please remember to be mindful of your surroundings at all times while this investigation continues. Do not use your cell phone while seated in your car. Take the conversation inside and avoid lingering in a parked vehicle. As always, report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
