Dear Neighbor,

Public Safety Update

The police notified me of a shooting in our neighborhood last night. Two women were shot inside of a car on the 6400 block of N Bell around 10 p.m. The victims are currently in St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.

The police believe the victims were in a parked car when a black male approached and fired at them. The motive for the shooting is currently unknown; however, the police are actively investigating. If you have any information, please contact the Area 3 Bureau of Detectives at (312) 744-8261.

I have been in constant communication with 24th District Commander Joseph Brennan, and the police are increasing patrols around the neighborhood.

I will update you with more information when it becomes available.

Free Backpacks at the 50th Ward Office

I now have more backpacks and school supplies available in my office. Anyone who needs is welcome to stop by during normal business hours at the 50th Ward Office, 2949 W. Devon.

I want to make sure all of the neighborhood's children have the supplies they need to have a successful school year. Please stop by and pick up your backpack!

Thank you to Studio Elite for making these supplies available to our community.

School Is Back - Drive Safely!

School is back in session for many of the neighborhood's children. Please help keep our kids safe by driving cautiously on residential streets, especially near schools and bus stops.

I also want to remind everyone to come to a complete stop at stop signs. Even if you do not see anyone at the intersection, you must stop completely and count to three before driving. Kids are often difficult to spot, especially at night.

Wishing all of our neighborhood's children a wonderful–and safe–school year!

Improving the 50th Ward Infrastructure

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is currently in the 50th Ward resurfacing many of our streets. Fixing streets is the most common infrastructure request I receive, and I am happy to report that nearly 30 local streets are being completely resurfaced this year through my Aldermanic Menu funding.

Resurfacing is typically a 2-3 week process. First, crews will grind down the street and remove the top layer of old asphalt. Next, utilities will adjust the manholes and other structures in the street to meet the height of the new roadway surface. Finally, crews will lay new asphalt and paint any needed pavement markings.

There may be breaks between each phase of the work as new crews and different equipment are brought to the project. If your street is currently being resurfaced, I ask for your patience as City crews perform the work. I understand how frustrating construction can be. However, after a few weeks of inconvenience, you will have a smooth new driving surface that should last for years.

Improving the infrastructure of the 50th Ward has been one of my chief priorities as Alderman, and I have resurfaced streets in every section of the neighborhood. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Asian-American Community Meet & Greet

I joined Governor Pritzker, Lt. Governor Stratton and many local elected officials for a meet and greet with the Asian-American community on Wednesday.

The 50th Ward has a large and vibrant Asian-American population and they have had a tremendous and positive impact on the cultural life of the neighborhood. I was very glad to meet everyone there!

Deadline to Apply for a Free Gas or Transit Card

The deadline is approaching to apply for a free gas or transit card through the Chicago Moves Program. Eligible residents must apply by Thursday, September 1 to be included in the final lottery.

Prepaid gas cards of $150 and transit cards of $50 are available to eligible residents in need. Apply now at chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves or fill out a paper application at any Chicago Public Library.

Recipients of the gas and transit cards will be selected by lottery. 75% of the cards will prioritize residents in community areas that face higher mobility hardship, including the 50th Ward. The remaining 25% of the cards will be distributed citywide in equal amounts to each ward. The final lottery will be held in the second week of September.

For more information or to apply, visit chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves.

Have a wonderful weekend. Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
Alderman, 50th Ward
