STC Update

Advocating for extending the STC program has been the top legislative priority for Agudath Israel and Rabbi Shlomo Soroka spent the last two weeks in the capitol doing just that. If extending STC is to be addressed by Illinois' General Assembly this session, it's anticipated it would be done at the end of the legislative session. The General Assembly was unable to meet the self-imposed deadline of May 19th to pass a budget; they will be reconvening on Wednesday and are scheduled to pass a budget and adjourn by Friday. By the time the General Assembly adjourns, we will know whether the program has been extended, or will need be taken up during veto session in November.

Kosher Halal Bill

Working together with the Muslim Civic Coalition, Agudath Israel of Illinois successfully helped HB3643 pass the Senate. This bill will require schools, correctional facilities & state hospitals to provide kosher & halal food options upon request. The bill is scheduled to be voted in committee on Wednesday, and will hopefully be passed out of the House by the end of the week. Agudah thanks Senator Ram Villivalam for his leadership on this legislation.

Yahalom Mother's Event

This past week, Yahalom Chicago hosted an evening for Yahalom mothers at Nuovo. Close to 30 women attended this relaxing and meaningful event. In the words of a mother who attended, "I came away from the evening feeling nourished- physically, emotionally and spiritually."
