Last week, Flatbush rabbanim met with representatives of Agudah's Chayim Aruchim division. Hosted by the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition, some of the topics addressed by Rabbi Shmuel Lefkowitz, president of Chayim Aruchim, included hospice care, medical tests aimed at determining brain death, repercussions for health insurance and the necessity of considering alternative avenues. Rabbi Benzion Schiffenbauer, Rav of Khal Bnei Torah of Flatbush, shared his own experiences with Chayim Aruchim with the assembled rabbanim, and encouraged them to avail themselves of Chayim Aruchim's understanding of both medical realities and halacha. Rabbi Ben Zion Leser, menahel of Machon Chayim Aruchim, discussed feeding tubes, dialysis, and the perspective of liberal doctors who may advocate for withholding treatment and deeming certain interventions as futile. He also emphasized the significance of families involving their Rav early on and actively participating in the care of patients.
