The Talmud in Sotah discusses the war mentioned in this Parashah. Rabbi Yehudah says in the name of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai: "God said to Israel, even if you have only fulfilled the recitation of the Shema morning and evening, you will not be delivered into the hands of your enemies." Reb Noson explains that the Shema represents faith, and if there is faith, there is victory — both physically and spiritually.
