Dear Neighbor,

Framework for Reopening Chicago

Mayor Lightfoot and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced today "Protecting Chicago"—the framework that the City will be using to guide our reopening process amid COVID-19.

Protecting Chicago is a five-phase framework in alignment with the State of Illinois's plan. We are currently in "Phase Two: Stay-At-Home," where our primary goal is flattening the curve. We are working towards "Phase Three: Cautiously Reopen," where more businesses and entities will be allowed to open with strict safety protocols. Transitioning between phases is determined by our success in decreasing spread of the virus, increasing tracking capabilities, protecting vulnerable residents, and ensuring our healthcare system has sufficient beds and ventilators.

The specific criteria for transitioning between phases will be reviewed and revisited on an ongoing basis. You can view a summary of the framework here.

The City is seeking public input to ensure the reopening is phased in a way that works best for our residents. To provide feedback, please visit www.chicago.gov/coronavirus/reopeningsurvey.

I know we are all eager to get back to normal life, but it is essential that we have a phased plan for reopening in as safe a manner as possible. Please take a few minutes to look over the plan, then take the survey. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Complete the Census Now!

I want to remind everyone of the vital importance of taking the 2020 Census. Information collected from the census is used to ensure equal political representation and fair allocation of government resources. This cycle, more than $800 billion in federal funding is at stake for everything from education and healthcare to infrastructure and social safety net programs.

Remember, for every additional person counted in Chicago, we stand to gain approximately $1,400 that could be used towards our parks, schools, and infrastructure. This could mean hundreds of millions of dollars that our city simply cannot afford to lose!

The 50th Ward census response rate is currently 53.5%, which is ranked 17 out of the city's 50 Wards. We have a long way to go to get to Chicago's target 75% self-response rate. There are about 9,521 households in the 50th Ward which have not responded!

The census contains 10 short questions and takes only a few minutes to complete. It does not ask for sensitive information, such as social security number or immigration status, and is safe and private. You can fill it out online at my2020census.gov or by phone using one of the Census Questionnaire Assistance Numbers below:

50th Ward Heroes

Every week, I have been highlighting the 50th Ward Heroes who are keeping our neighborhood and city running during the coronavirus pandemic. Today, as we commemorate the last day of Teacher Appreciation Week, I am unable to single out just one educator. They are all heroes.

The 50th Ward has some of the best schools in the City of Chicago, and that is only because we have some of the most dedicated and caring teachers. This has never been more true than right now, when we rely on teachers to keep our children learning even when the schools are all closed. Local teachers have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide personalized educational material, engaging Zoom lectures and fun activities for our children who are stuck at home.

On behalf of a grateful 50th Ward community, thank you to all the local teachers for your service in fighting the pandemic! See just a few of the wonderful teachers that make the 50th Ward so great on our Facebook page here.

The 50th Ward has many essential workers who are going out so we can all stay at home. If you know someone who is going above and beyond the call of duty to serve our community during the coronavirus outbreak, please nominate them as a 50th Ward Hero.

Contact me at info@50thwardchicago.com to nominate a neighbor. Please include their contact information so I can reach out to them. Together, we can all show a small token of support to the brave essential workers who are risking their lives for the public good.

Happy Mother's Day!

This Sunday, May 10, is Mother's Day. With schools closed and a lack of childcare options, mothers are doing more than ever to keep families running and provide a sense of normalcy in these troubling times.

As both a mother and a daughter myself, I understand the tremendous love shared between children and their mothers, and I know how much mothers appreciate an act of recognition on this day.

I want to wish all of the 50th Ward's mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers a happy and relaxing Mother's Day!

Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
Alderman, 50th Ward
