Follow the 50th Ward on Social Media

Coronavirus updates are happening so rapidly that our traditional email newsletters are not always the best way to keep up to date on all the vital information. I also post frequently on social media to advise the public on emerging information.

Please follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to make sure you get all of our updates as soon as they are available.

Dear Neighbor,

Stay Home. Save Lives.

The weather is getting warmer in Chicago, and I know everyone is eager to get out and enjoy it. However, I want to reiterate the importance of social distancing during this vital time. Governor Pritzker announced last week that our region is on track to move to Phase 3 of the reopening plan at the end of the month, but that will only remain true if people stay home!

If we want to successfully reopen our state and city, we all need to work together. Continue to practice social distancing, keep wearing your face mask, and avoid unnecessary interactions. Please, for the sake of our city and our community: stay home and save lives!

50th Ward Webinar - This Thursday

I am pleased to invite you all to another 50th Ward webinar: "Coping with the COVID Crisis." We will be joined by Dr. Tommy Dang of Swedish Hospital, who will present wellness tips to keep us healthy and calm during the outbreak. We will also provide an update on the local coronavirus situation and present information on how to get tested for COVID-19.

The webinar is this Thursday, May 21 at 11 a.m. Register at www.50thwardchicago.com/webinar. Please send any questions in advance to info@50thwardchicago.com.

Dr. Dang is board certified in Family Medicine. Born in a refugee camp in Malaysia, his family fled Vietnam shortly after the war and came to America with the help of the United Nations. He works with patients of all enthic, social and economic backgrounds, and believes that the key to treating an individual lies in addressing the mind, body and soul.

I hope to see you all on Zoom for this important meeting.

Street Sweeping Update

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation has resumed posting street sweeping signs as of TODAY (Monday, May 18). We are asking that residents move their cars so crews can effectively clean our streets and intersections. However, the city will not enforce the no parking postings with tickets or towing.

You can view the full street sweeping schedule as an interactive map on the 50th Ward website here, or download a printable version at the Department of Streets and Sanitation website here.

Virtual City Council Meeting - May 20

The Chicago City Council will be holding a virtual meeting on Wednesday, May 20 at 10 a.m. You can watch the Council meeting online at www.chicityclerk.com.

The meeting will also include an opportunity for public comment. Anyone wishing to comment shall complete the form on the City Clerk's website or call (312) 744-6800 and leave a voice message with their name and telephone number. If you wish to participate, you must be available at 10 a.m. on the day of the meeting and have access to a touch-tone telephone. For more information, click here.

Get Hired Illinois

The coronavirus outbreak has had a severe impact on our workforce. The State of Illinois is facing record unemployment, and many residents who want to work are unable to find a job. To help, the State has launched Get Hired Illinois—a new one-stop-shop dedicated to connecting residents with jobs.

Visit Illinois.gov/GetHired to look for open positions, attend virtual job fairs, access new skills, and pursue training opportunities. Employers can also use the site to search for qualified employees.

We all know that the best way to ensure the health of our economy is to make sure as many people are working as possible. If you are out of work, or you know someone that is searching for a job, please visit Illinois.gov/GetHired.

Roof and Porch Repair Program

The Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) has announced the date for this year's Roof and Porch Repair Program. Applications will be accepted on ONE DAY ONLY – Thursday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you would like to take advantage of this program, please visit www.chicago.gov/roofandporch or call 311 to be placed on the list. Applicants will be selected via lottery.

This program offers funds to income-eligible Chicago homeowners to make repairs on their roofs or porches. A random lottery drawing will take place for registered participants in July, and those selected will be formally notified by mail.

For more information about the Roof and Porch Repair Program, please call DPD customer service at (312) 744-3653.

Complete the Census Now!

One important thing you can do during the Stay at Home order is complete the 2020 Census and help your city get equal political representation and fair allocation of government resources.

The 50th Ward census response rate is currently 57.4%. This is higher than the city average, but still nowhere near the Chicago target 75% self-response rate. This means there are about 8,717 households in the 50th Ward which have not responded!

Remember, for every additional person counted in Chicago, we stand to gain approximately $1,400 that could be used towards parks, schools, and infrastructure! Please visit my2020census.gov to find out how the next 10 years depends on your next 10 minutes.

Remember Your Face Mask

Face coverings are mandatory in Illinois in any public place where you cannot maintain six feet of social distance. To help the 50th Ward stay safe, I have been hard at work distributing free face masks to local residents.

I have given away thousands of masks so far. If you are in need of one, please contact me at info@50thwardchicago.com or (773) 262-1050 and I will get one to you.

You can also make your own masks out of a scarf or old t-shirt. It is easy to do and requires no sewing or special skills. Please see below for an instructional video:

If you must go out for an essential purpose, please do not take any chances. Wear your mask and help keep everyone safe!

Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
Alderman, 50th Ward

Local Coronavirus Numbers

The Chicago Department of Health (CDPH) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) post regular data about the COVID-19 outbreak. You can find statewide information here. As of this writing, there are 96,485 confirmed cases in Illinois, including 37,434 confirmed cases in Chicago.

Health officials have been releasing data by zip codes. These are the number of cumulative confirmed cases for the three zip codes that overlap the 50th Ward, as of May 18:
  • 60645 - 885
  • 60659 - 576
  • 60660 - 317
Confirmed cases have occurred in every zip code in Illinois. Data listed is based on the zip code of residence, which may not be the location of exposure.
