A. Shulchan Aruch (OC 96:1) writes that you may not hold anything during davening that might distract you during tefillah. Mishnah Berurah (96:1) writes that this is not limited to Shemoneh Esrei but includes Pesukei D'zimra and Kriyas Shema as well. However, Shulchan Aruch writes that one may hold a siddur in their hand, since this will not be a distraction. On the contrary, a siddur supports concentration. Rav Yitzchak Zylberstein writes that for this same reason one may hold an umbrella during davening. Without an umbrella one will be distracted by the rain, and the umbrella makes it easier to concentrate. |
