November 22, 2021 | 18 Kislev, 5782 | | Don't Separate Us: Rabbi Shlomo Soroka Testifies on Redistricting in Chicago | | Redistricting can be a complex and seemingly abstract topic. This is unfortunate because it is also extremely important topic. The way maps are drawn affect a community for at least a decade, and often longer.
Last week, Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, Agudath Israel of Illinois' director of government affairs, testified before the Chicago City Council on the city's redistricting process. He explained that currently the Orthodox Jewish community of West Rogers Park and Peterson Park is primarily concentrated in one ward, but at risk of being split, which would dilute the political voice of the Orthodox community. The Orthodox Jewish community is a "community of interest" that is unfortunately is often overlooked in this process, despite its unique needs. Soroka spoke to the history of the Orthodox Jewish community in Chicago and explained how an independent educational system is imperative for the survival and growth of Orthodox Jewry. He also explained that with antisemitism on the rise, security is a major concern for Orthodox Jews who are easily identifiable, and therefore more vulnerable. There's also a general lack of awareness and understanding regarding the Orthodox community. It is therefore of vital importance that their elected representatives understand and appreciate their cultural sensitivities and their need for certain accommodations. Rabbi Soroka concluded his testimony by asking the body to take the needs of the Orthodox Jewish community into consideration while in this process, saying, "We need representation that understands our history, culture, needs, and values to be effective champions. Carving up the community will dilute our political voice and will harm our ability to continue to grow and thrive." | | Rabbi Soroka discusses the new map proposal with the Chicago city Council's Latino Caucus at a virtual meeting on Wednesday, November 17. | | Yahalom Chicago Inaugural Event | | On Sunday, November 14, Yahalom Chicago held its inaugural event, at the home of Mrs. Chasi Davis. Chicago mothers of children with special needs connected with each other while enjoying a delicious brunch, giveaway, and raffle prizes.
Rabbi Shlomo Soroka opened by sharing the genesis of Yahalom and how its creation was only possible due to the many years of work by community pioneers, and the support of so many throughout the community.
Yahalom Chicago's director, Mrs. Fiona Kark explained the goals and objectives of the division and how Yahalom can presently assist families navigate a daunting and often lonely journey. She then introduced the featured speaker, Mrs. Shira Weisenberg, who has worked with individuals with special needs and their families for over 25 years. Attendees left feeling encouraged, inspired, and thirsting for more. | | Rabbi Ehrman Promoted to COO of Agudath Israel of America | | Reception at National Agudah Headquarters in honor of the announcement of Rabbi Ehrman as COO of Agudath Israel of America. | | It is with great pride that we share with you that our CEO Rabbi Yitzchok Ehrman has been promoted to the position of COO of Agudath Israel of America.
During his 15 years of leadership R' Yitzchok has used his one-of-a-kind skillset to build our Agudah into one of the most influential and far-reaching organizations in the Midwest. It is worthwhile to pause and reflect on just a selection of the new or expanded programs and initiatives that were launched under his leadership-
● Midwest Rabbinic Council ● School Busing ● Midwest Bais Horaah ● H3 Business Halacha Conference ● Kiwi Kids School Lunches and Box Program ● Larger Midwest Agudah Conventions ● Camp Bnos Maarava and Camp Nageela Midwest ● Scholarship Tax Credit Program
It is clear, that much to his credit, our Agudah has strengthened Torah life, assisted those in need, developed critical infrastructure and has been a staunch advocate and defender for our communities. His close relationship and loyal adherence to the guidance of his Rosh HaYeshiva Harav Avrohom Chaim Levin zt"l was his trademark. Thousands, and possibly tens of thousands, have benefited directly from his efforts. Now, as the new COO of our National office, he will have the opportunity to further amplify the influence of his wisdom, vision and drive. R' Yitzchok truly embodies the values of this great and historic organization. We are confident that he will devotedly fulfill his duties in a way that will further elevate and strengthen the Agudah and thereby positively impact each and every Jewish Community across the country.
For us, although this announcement is bittersweet, we are comforted in knowing that Agudath Israel of Illinois is and always will be close to his heart. R' Yitzchok will not be moving until this coming summer and even afterwards he has committed to continue working closely with our office far beyond this upcoming period of transition for our organization. In the meantime, we have already started the search process and have an interim plan in place to enable us to continue our work uninterrupted on behalf of the community.
We wish Rabbi Ehrman and his family much bracha v'hatzlacha with the new position. We look forward to many amazing things to come.
