Chicago Police District Council Candidates
Two members of the community have filed to run for Police District Council, a new office comprised of three civilians in each police district throughout the city. The Orthodox Jewish community is mostly concentrated in the 17th and 24th districts. Rabbi Simcha Adelman filed to run in District 17 and Mr. Mitchell Rose filed to run in District 24. If they have enough valid signatures, they will be on the ballot for the upcoming municipal elections in February. The top three vote-getters in each district win the election. The District Council race adds another layer of importance for this upcoming election when the mayor and aldermen are up for re-election as well. Candidates running for this office have widely diverse views when it comes to policing policies and resources/funding for local law enforcement. This office could have a real impact on police presence and the safety of our streets and neighborhoods.
Public Safety Security Meeting with Deputy Mayor Elena Gottreich

In response to a recent local uptick in violent crime, Agudath Israel of Illinois reached out to Chicago's Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, Elena Gottreich. The deputy mayor came to the Agudah office Monday morning along with First Deputy Jessica Gall. Also in attendance were Alderwoman Samantha Nugent (39th ward) and Alderwoman Debra Silverstein (50th ward), as well as some community leaders. The objective of the meeting was to discuss the issues and potential solutions surrounding public safety that are specific to our community. Among the measures discussed were new policies on how police resources are utilized and allocated, changes that put more beat cops on the street, and improving police response time. Other ideas and the potential for a pilot program were explored as well. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
Developments for the Kosher Food Act
Agudath Israel of Illinois is partnering with the Illinois Muslim Civic Coalition to advocate for a bill that will require kosher options at state facilities (public schools, hospitals etc). Significantly, this bill provides a definition for Kosher that will have positive ramifications regarding enforcement of the Kosher Food Act.
State Security Grant
Agudath Israel of Illinois is assisting many schools and organizations in arranging for vulnerability assessments with the police in order to apply for the new $20 million state security grant program. The program, a priority of the Agudah, passed in 2017 but wasn't funded until Governor Pritzker included it in his FY23 budget. The appropriation was advocated for by Agudah, as well as a diverse coalition led by the JUF. New Pirchei Leadership & Learning Program
Agudath Israel of Illinois is pleased to announce the start of a new chapter, with the reopening of Pirchei learning programs under the direction of the new Pirchei Leadership. Rabbi Yehuda Meisels and Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, both with many years of experience, have joined forces to head the new programming division of Pirchei Agudas Yisroel.
Even before their official roles began this week, Rabbi Kamenetzky and Rabbi Meisels have already begun setting up a new Friday Night Limud focusing on Mishnayos for the 4th and 5th grade boys of the community. IY"H they hope to expand that program to more locations and add more limudim for more ages as well, as soon as they have the leaders and locations in place.
