Q: At Shul last Erev Shabbos Chanukah, the gabbai was worried about timing so he did hadlakas neiros in shul before there was a minyan in the shul. Was that the right thing?

A: Dayan Fuerst Shlita responds:

The Mor U'Ketziah (הובא בסי תרע״א שע״ת) rules that a beracha is only be recited on lighting in shul if there is a minyan present. Mishnah Berurah (שם ס״ק מה וביה"ל ד"ה ויש נוהגין) quotes those who disagree. He concludes that ideally one should have a minyan present, but b'dieved one may recite the berachos even without a minyan. Therefore, on Erev Shabbos when there is not much time, the menorah may be kindled in shul before Minchah even before the minyan arrives.
